Role Purpose
The Polymer Formulation & Compounding Engineer is the technical engine of our product development and production operation. Working alongside our Process Engineer (twin-screw extrusion specialist), you will be responsible for developing, optimising, and validating masterbatch formulations across all three product lines, setting up and running our in-house formulation laboratory, and ensuring every product that leaves our plant meets customer specifications and regulatory requirements.
Job Description
1. Formulation Development
- Develop new masterbatch formulation product lines from first principles
- Select and evaluate raw materials — carrier resins (LDPE, LLDPE, PP, EVA), active additives, dispersing agents, and processing aids
- Optimise additive loading levels, carrier resin compatibility, and let-down ratios for each product line
- Apply Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology to formulation development for efficient, data-driven optimisation
- Scale up formulations from lab scale to full production on the twin-screw compounding line
- Develop and maintain a structured formulation database and technical documentation library
2. Twin-Screw Extruder — Compounding Operations
- Work hands-on with our twin-screw extruder — setting process parameters including temperature profile, screw speed, feed rate, and torque
- Define and optimise screw configuration for dispersive and distributive mixing of pigments and functional additives
- Develop and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all compounding operations
- Troubleshoot process issues — melt degradation, poor dispersion, pellet quality defects — using structured root cause analysis
- Monitor and control critical quality parameters during production runs
Education
- Bachelor's Degree (minimum) in Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science
- Master's Degree or higher in Polymer Engineering or Polymer Science is strongly preferred
Mandatory Technical Experience — You MUST have all of these
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in polymer compounding or masterbatch formulation in an industrial setting
- Demonstrated hands-on experience operating a Twin-Screw Extruder (TSE) — setting temperature profiles, screw speed, torque monitoring, and feed rates
- Direct experience in formulation development — not just quality testing but actually developing and optimising polymer formulations
- Strong knowledge of polyolefin systems — LDPE, LLDPE, PP, EVA — as carrier resins
- Proficiency in polymer characterisation techniques: MFI (Melt Flow Index), DSC, FTIR, density, and mechanical testing
- Experience in lab-scale formulation trials and scale-up to production
- Ability to read, develop, and work from P&ID drawings and process flow diagrams
Strongly Preferred Experience — Not mandatory but highly valued
- Direct masterbatch manufacturing experience — colour MB, white MB, black MB, or functional/additive MB
- Formulation knowledge in at least one of our three product lines: antimicrobial additives, antistatic agents, or UV/HALS stabiliser systems for agricultural film
- Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) for formulation optimisation
- Familiarity with filter pressure value (FPV) testing for dispersion quality assessment
- Experience setting up a polymer laboratory or developing SOPs in a new or growing facility
- Technical service or R&D experience at an additive supplier (BASF, Clariant, Songwon, Evonik, Lanxess, or similar)
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management systems and internal auditing
