Job Description

HelloWorld Robotics is hiring a full-time Autonomous Driving & Robotics Engineer to develop and deploy autonomous buggies and mobile robots in indoor and outdoor environments. You will work with engineering and operations teams on systems used for delivery, demonstrations, trials, and commercial deployments.

This is a hands-on role at the intersection of robotics and physical AI. You will work across ROS software, SLAM, perception, planning, control, sensors, and system integration. You will also have opportunities to prototype and evaluate newer approaches, including vision-language-action (VLA) models and other embodied AI methods, where they can improve how robots understand and respond to their surroundings. All approaches must be tested on physical systems and assessed for safety, reliability, and real-time performance.

The primary work location is MRANTI Park, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, with work also based at Medan Connaught, Cheras.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, and maintain ROS1 and ROS2 software for autonomous mobile robots and driving platforms.
  • Improve localization, mapping, perception, planning, and control for indoor and outdoor operation.
  • Develop and evaluate SLAM, AI-based perception, and autonomous driving methods in real operating environments.
  • Prototype and assess physical AI approaches, including VLA-based methods, for tasks such as scene understanding, decision-making, and robot action.
  • Evaluate new AI methods against practical requirements such as latency, robustness, explainability, safety, and performance on available compute hardware.
  • Integrate and calibrate LiDAR, cameras, GNSS, IMUs, encoders, and other sensors.
  • Deploy robots and autonomous driving systems at test and customer sites against safety, reliability, and performance requirements.
  • Plan and conduct field tests; collect data, analyse logs, reproduce failures, and validate fixes on physical robots.
  • Diagnose software, networking, compute, sensor, electrical, and mechanical integration problems.
  • Write maintainable Python and C++ code, launch configurations, tests, documentation, and deployment procedures.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools while reviewing, testing, and taking ownership of the resulting work.
  • Document technical limitations, incidents, test results, and engineering decisions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and field operations teams during development and deployment.
  • Put safety first, report risks early, and do not present unvalidated results as production-ready.

Requirements

Essential

  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in robotics, autonomous vehicles, mobile robots, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience beyond simulation, including integration, deployment, testing, or troubleshooting on physical robots or autonomous vehicles.
  • Practical ROS1 and/or ROS2 experience, including packages, topics, services, actions, launch systems, TF, bags, and debugging tools.
  • Ability to program in Python and/or C++ on Linux or Ubuntu.
  • Working knowledge of SLAM, localization, navigation, path planning, perception, sensor fusion, or autonomous control.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Malaysia, professional English communication, and willingness to support field testing when required.

Preferred

  • End-to-end ownership of a mobile robotics or autonomous driving project demonstrated on real hardware.
  • Experience with physical AI or embodied AI, including VLA models, vision-language models, multimodal perception, imitation learning, or learned planning and control.
  • Experience evaluating AI models on robots, including data collection, deployment, latency, failure analysis, and comparison with established navigation or control methods.
  • Experience with detection, segmentation, tracking, prediction, or sensor fusion.
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools in a completed project, supported by testing and clear code ownership.
  • Experience operating across indoor and outdoor environments, including changing weather and dynamic obstacles.
  • Knowledge of calibration, time synchronization, profiling, containers, networking, CI/CD, or fleet deployment.
  • Hardware integration or electronics debugging skills.
  • Experience in a startup, field robotics, logistics, research-to-product, or on-demand delivery environment.
