Job Description

Responsibilities

About The Role

Are you caring, patient and energetic, with an understanding of autism in children? We are looking for a reliable Personal Assistant to support an active eight-year-old boy to enjoy fun activities, explore his local community and gradually build confidence with someone new.

He is non-verbal and is beginning to develop his spoken communication. He has his own ways of communicating his needs and preferences, so taking the time to understand him and learn what works best for him will be an important part of the role.

He loves getting out and about, whether that means visiting the park, enjoying a trip to the beach, having a picnic or popping to the shops. He also enjoys movement and spinning, and has an annual pass to Monkey Business.

What will the role involve?

  • Building a trusting and positive relationship with him at his own pace.
  • Supporting enjoyable outings to the park, beach, shops and other activities he enjoys.
  • Learning to recognise and respond to his individual communication cues and sensory needs.
  • Encouraging confidence, independence and positive experiences in the community.
  • Providing appropriate supervision and maintaining his safety, particularly when out and about.
  • Working closely with Mum and following agreed routines and guidance to ensure consistent support.

Requirements Of The Role

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a good understanding of autism in children and how it can affect communication, sensory needs and behaviour.
  • Is physically active and able to keep up with an energetic young child during outings.
  • Has a strong awareness of safety when supporting a child outdoors and in busy public places.
  • Is patient, calm, observant and responsive to non-verbal communication.
  • Understands the importance of building trust gradually and working in partnership with his family.
  • Is reliable, approachable and committed to providing consistent support.

Previous experience supporting autistic or non-verbal children would be valuable. Most importantly, you must be willing to learn about his individual needs and follow the family's agreed guidance.

Getting started

This role will begin gradually, allowing time for the successful applicant to get to know him and for Mum to build confidence in the support being provided. Initial introductions and support arrangements will be agreed with the family, with the aim of developing a trusting relationship and enabling enjoyable outings together over time.

Patience, understanding and consistency will be essential throughout this process.

Important information

This vacancy is advertised by Southend Care Ltd on behalf of an individual client. The successful applicant will be employed and paid directly by the client, not by Southend Care Ltd. Southend Care Ltd facilitates the arrangement.

The successful applicant will be required to complete the appropriate pre-employment and safeguarding checks for this role, which will be confirmed during recruitment. This will incclude an enhanced DBS check, references and proof of right to work in the UK.

If you have the patience, energy and understanding to help a young boy enjoy new experiences and build confidence with a trusted person, we would love to hear from you.
