Job Purpose

Lead and manage the end-to-end lifecycle of moulding tools and tooling assets, including design, fabrication, qualification, maintenance, and optimization. Oversee the toolroom / machine shop operations and the moulding process to ensure tooling reliability, production efficiency, and cost targets are met while supporting new product introduction (NPI) and mass production.

Key Responsibilities & Job Description1. Tooling Lifecycle & Asset Management

• Oversee the entire lifecycle of moulds and tooling, from design and development through qualification, production, maintenance, and retirement
• Maintain accurate tooling records including solid models, assemblies, drawings, and revision history
• Create and manage a tooling maintenance scheduling and tracking system that is visual, accurate, and adequate to meet quality and manufacturing needs
• Advise on and help create an organized structure to catalogue and track all mould tools

2. Toolroom / Machine Shop Operations

• Manage toolroom / machine shop operations, including equipment, manpower, and maintenance
• Prioritize and schedule tooling repairs, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement activities
• Coordinate emergency tooling repairs to minimize production downtime
• Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs for dies, moulds, fixtures, and tooling
• Monitor tooling performance and drive improvements in tool life, uptime, quality, and scrap reduction

3. Tooling & Mould Design Engineering

• Lead tooling and mould engineering activities, including DFM, mould design, fabrication, trial, repair, and improvement
• Collaborate with NPD / R&D teams to verify design for manufacturability of new products
• Review and approve mould designs to ensure they are correctly designed and manufacturable
• Ensure tooling specifications, processing methods, and operation fixtures are established and maintained

4. Moulding Process Support & Troubleshooting

• Troubleshoot tooling and production issues and drive continuous improvement
• Provide technical direction in tooling, tool design, mould building, machining, and tooling operations to support engineering and production needs
• Support moulding operations on mould process troubleshooting, problem-solving, and improvements in efficiency and utilization
• Ensure tooling is maintained and available to meet production requirements

5. Project & Vendor Management

• Manage tooling projects, timelines, costs, and deliverables
• Review RFQs, tooling quotations, and cost estimates
• Coordinate with toolmakers, suppliers, Production, Quality, and Purchasing teams
• Manage external tooling vendors for repairs, modifications, and outsourced work

6. Budget & Cost Control

• Develop and manage department budgets and support capital tooling investments
• Manage tooling inventories, spare parts, consumables, and external tooling vendors
• Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities in tooling maintenance and repair

7. Team Leadership & Development

• Lead and develop the tooling / engineering team
• Hire, train, and mentor engineers and support staff to work to their full potential
• Maintain department quality and performance metrics; write performance reviews and solve departmental issues
• Drive team performance through clear goal setting, coaching, and development

8. Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards
• Oversee safety and 6S programs
• Apply 5S methodology to Tool & Mold area
• Assure a safe work environment; manage team and department safety

Qualifications & RequirementsEducation

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Tool & Die, Industrial Technology, or related field
• Associate degree or equivalent tool making apprenticeship with strong hands-on experience considered
• Journeyman Tool & Die certification strongly preferred

Experience

• Minimum 7–10 years of experience in tooling, mould engineering, tool fabrication, maintenance, or repair
• Minimum 3–5 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a toolroom or manufacturing environment
• Experience in plastic injection moulding, die casting, or equivalent precision manufacturing processes
• Proven track record in managing multiple tool build projects simultaneously

Technical Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of mould / tool design and fabrication
• Proficient in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software; able to read 2D/3D engineering drawings
• Experience with DFM, tooling costing, and supplier management
• Knowledge of tool steels, heat treatments, and materials used in mould manufacturing
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs for moulds and tooling
• Familiarity with SPC, PFMEA, and continuous improvement methodologies
