Job Description
Responsibilities
A Test Manager in the banking domain is a senior leadership role responsible for defining and governing the entire testing strategy across complex financial systems. Unlike general IT testing roles, this position demands deep domain knowledge of banking products (such as Core Banking, Payments, Cards, or Financial Markets) and strict adherence to regulatory compliance and security standards. The primary objective is to mitigate risk, ensure software quality, and coordinate multiple testing streams (SIT, UAT, Regression) across internal teams and external vendors to deliver stable banking platforms.
Core ResponsibilitiesTest Strategy, Governance, and Planning
The manager owns the Master Test Plan and defines the overall approach (Waterfall, Agile, or Hybrid) for major banking programs . This involves defining entry and exit criteria, estimating effort, and ensuring test coverage aligns with business requirements and regulatory standards. In banking, this often includes coordinating testing for Core Banking migrations or payment system upgrades (e.g., ISO 20022) .
Execution Management and Defect Triage
They oversee the execution of System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and End-to-End testing . A critical duty is leading defect triage meetings, prioritizing bugs based on severity and business impact, and ensuring resolutions are verified before go-live. They must also manage test environments and data, which is particularly sensitive in banking due to data privacy regulations .
Stakeholder and Vendor Management
Banking IT landscapes frequently involve multiple vendors and offshore teams. The Test Manager acts as the primary point of contact between business stakeholders, development teams, and third-party testing providers. They are responsible for providing transparent status reports, managing escalations, and ensuring that external vendors adhere to the bank's quality gates and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) .
Quality Assurance and Automation
While not always hands-on, the manager drives the adoption of test automation to improve efficiency, particularly for regression testing . They ensure that testing processes comply with internal audit requirements and industry regulations. They also track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as defect leakage, test coverage, and execution progress .
Key Qualifications and Domain ExpertiseBanking Domain Knowledge
Candidates must possess specific functional knowledge. Common specializations include Retail/Corporate Banking, Core Banking Systems, Cards and Payments, or Financial Markets/Treasury . Understanding transaction lifecycles, clearing and settlement processes, and regulatory reporting is often mandatory .
Experience and Certifications
Typically, employers require 8 to 15 years of total software testing experience, with at least 3 to 5 years in a Test Manager or Lead capacity . Certifications such as ISTQB (especially Advanced Level Test Manager) are frequently listed as mandatory or preferred. Experience with test management tools like JIRA, Confluence, ALM/Quality Center, or Zephyr is standard .
Methodology and Tool Proficiency
