About us

Behind the Business is a Webby and Signal Award-winning video show and podcast on business and leadership, founded and hosted by business journalist and CNN alum Michelle Toh.

The show features interviews with top founders and CEOs, including the leaders of Airbnb, Microsoft, Rivian, NYSE, Samsung, Canva, Poppi, Peloton, Revolve and Away.

What started as an independent production has grown quickly in its first year, becoming a top 10 US business podcast and "Instant Hit Show" on Spotify, gaining 100,000 YouTube subscribers, ranking as top business podcast in almost 30 countries, and reaching millions of viewers monthly.

We aim to bring the editorial rigor and journalistic standards of traditional media to a new generation of digital-first storytelling, while giving audiences a closer look at the people behind top consumer brands.

With ambitious plans for what's next, this is an opportunity to work closely with the host and a lean, creative team, contribute to the show's editorial and creative direction, and help shape the next chapter of a new media brand from the ground up.

What you'll do

Editorial development

  • Turn extensive research and background documents into compelling, well-structured and fact-checked interview scripts that reflect the host's voice, editorial sensibility and high standards for accuracy.
  • Pitch and script short-form explainer videos and other editorial content around global business, markets, technology, consumer trends and relevant news.
  • Help develop episode trailers, social videos and other editorial elements, with the support of an associate producer and video editors by picking soundbites and suggesting fun production or visual design ideas.

Creative production & post-production oversight

  • Plan and manage the weekly post-production schedule, coordinating with editors and keeping deliverables on track.
  • Review and approve episode cuts, trailers, social clips, thumbnails and other video assets, providing clear, constructive editorial and creative direction to editors and ensuring all deliverables meet the show's editorial, visual and branding standards.
  • Select compelling episode thumbnails for testing, pitch strong headlines and angles that are engaging without being sensationalist, and create accurate, consistent show notes for each episode.

Note: This is a freelance, part-time role to begin with, focused on strengthening the team's editorial and production capabilities. We're looking for someone who can make an immediate impact in these core areas, with the potential opportunity to grow into a more involved role over time.

As the role grows, there may be significant additional hours and greater involvement, with opportunities to take on broader responsibilities, including creative production development, guest and partner relations, representing the show in strategic external conversations, audience partnerships and collaborations, and developing new formats and editorial initiatives.

We're looking for:

  • 5+ years of experience producing high-quality editorial, television, documentary, podcast or digital video content.
  • A background in, familiarity in or strong interest in business, finance, technology, consumer brands and the people shaping the world around us.
  • Ideally, you've worked on an established, respected show with a strong editorial identity. Experience with interview-driven shows is particularly valuable.
  • Exceptional writing, research, scripting and storytelling skills. You know how to turn complex information into clear, compelling conversations.
  • A sharp editorial eye and excellent judgment. You know what makes an interview interesting, what makes a story resonate and what audiences will — and won't — care about.
  • Highly organized and proactive, with the ability to independently manage multiple episodes, deadlines, edits and approvals.
  • A self-starter who anticipates what needs to happen next, knows how to be nimble and doesn't need hand-holding.
  • A communicative team player who is fully bought in on the mission of creating compelling, visually rich and journalistically rigorous business content and believes in treating everyone with respect.

Bonus if you have:

  • A background in business journalism or financial news.
  • A diverse range of interests across sectors.
  • Experience producing shows high-caliber interview-driven programs.
  • Experience scripting short-form explainers and editorial video content.
  • Knowledge of international business affairs.

Benefits:

  • Flexible schedule

Application Question(s):

  • What interests you about Behind the Business, and what would you bring to the role?
  • If you could pitch a guest for the show, who would it be and why? What would make for an interesting conversation?
