About the role
Royal Animal Rescue Singapore is Singapore’s first private 24/7 pet emergency ambulance and rescue service. Veterinary Technicians are the clinical lead on most dispatches. You stabilise the patient on scene and in the ambulance, support the attending veterinarian when one is deployed, and hand over a patient who is safer than when you arrived.
This is pre-hospital work, not a consultation-room job. Cases include trauma, high-rise falls, heatstroke, seizures, toxicity, respiratory distress, and cardiac arrest. You work in homes, carparks, void decks, and on the roadside, often at night, with an EMT Driver as your partner.
What you will do
- Lead clinical care on scene within protocol: primary survey, oxygen, temperature control, haemorrhage control, wound dressing, seizure first response, and safe restraint or sedation support as directed.
- Set up and run ambulance monitoring: SpO2, ECG where fitted, blood pressure, temperature, ETCO2 when available, and serial reassessment during transport.
- Prepare and assist with intravenous access, fluid resuscitation, and emergency drugs under the standing orders of the duty veterinarian or on-scene vet. You do not diagnose or prescribe.
- Run CPR as part of the team: compressions, airway support, BVM ventilation, and drug preparation against the RAR arrest protocol.
- Package and secure trauma patients, including spinal precautions and fracture support, and manage loading so the driver can move without delaying care.
- Support high-rise and confined-space rescues from the clinical side: patient assessment once accessible, analgesia or sedation preparation, and immediate care once the animal is reached. Rope work only if separately trained.
- Write a clear pre-hospital record and give a structured handover to the receiving clinic: history, vitals, interventions, response, and what is still outstanding.
- Restock, clean, and check the clinical kit after every case. Report expired drugs, failed equipment, and missing items before end of shift.
- Assist with stray and welfare cases under the Stray Emergency Fund protocol to the same clinical standard as paid jobs.
- Help train EMT Drivers on patient handling, infection control, and basic assist skills.
Requirements
- Recognised veterinary nursing, veterinary technology, or equivalent qualification. A diploma or degree in veterinary nursing or veterinary technology is preferred. Experienced veterinary assistants with substantial emergency or ICU exposure will be considered.
- Hands-on small-animal experience, ideally emergency, critical care, or ward nursing. New graduates are considered if clinical placement included ECC.
- Competent in intravenous catheter placement, fluid set-up, injection preparation, monitoring, and basic laboratory samples.
- Calm with aggressive, painful, or crashing patients, and able to direct an EMT Driver clearly.
- Physically able to kneel, lift, and work in heat, rain, and tight spaces, including night shifts.
- Eligible to work in Singapore. AVS does not issue a separate veterinary nurse licence. Scope on RAR dispatches is protocol-based and veterinarian-supervised.
- Smartphone literacy for case logging, photos, and clinic handover.
What we look for beyond the certificate
We hire technicians who can run a scene, not only a treatment bench. Priorities are airway, breathing, circulation, and a clean handover. You will follow RAR protocols, standing orders, and the duty vet. Progression toward senior veterinary paramedic duties, training roles, and the future hospital team is open to technicians who document well and keep their skills current.
What we provide
- Protocol training and supervised ride-alongs before you lead a dispatch.
- Uniform, PPE, and ambulance clinical kit.
- Exposure to real emergency cases alongside EMT Drivers and, on selected jobs, emergency veterinarians.
- Rotating roster with defined rest periods.
- A pathway aligned with emergency and critical care practice, including support if you are pursuing further ECC study.
