Job Description

Responsibilities

Job description:

BUILD MARKETS. SHAPE ECONOMIES.

At SGX Group, we create markets. We turn ideas into products and expand access to new opportunities. We are building the future of the exchange in-house: from architecture and platforms to the critical systems that power markets. The biggest decisions are still open to people who join us now.

The opportunity

The Assistant VP, Software Engineer (Data) is a hands-on technical leader and strong individual contributor responsible for designing, building and delivering scalable, secure and high-quality applications, data products and data platform capabilities across critical platforms and engineering domains. This is a full-stack software engineering role within the data team: you will build the services, applications and interfaces that sit on top of/integrates with the data platform and extend it to its users, as well as the pipelines and data applications/products beneath them. Working closely with product, architecture, data governance and delivery teams, this role provides technical leadership through solution design, engineering discipline and execution excellence, while contributing directly to resilient, high-performing data capabilities that support SGX’s technology-led, high-availability market infrastructure. This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to shape how data product is build, governed, served and consumed across the exchange, influence engineering standards, and accelerate innovation in a mission-critical environment.

For candidates with strong ambition, this role offers a compelling platform for growth. It provides the opportunity to deepen technical mastery across modern software and data engineering, cloud, platform services, analytics and AI enablement, and operational resilience, while expanding influence across architecture, product delivery and enterprise transformation initiatives. Over time, the role can evolve along multiple pathways, including senior individual contributor tracks such as Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, as well as broader leadership opportunities in engineering management, platform leadership, or strategic technology delivery. For professionals who want to combine hands-on engineering with visible impact, SGX offers both the scale and significance to build a rewarding long-term career.

The Data Engineering Team

This role performs software engineering within the Data Engineering team that builds, runs and evolves the applications, data platforms and data products behind SGX Group’s business and market infrastructure.

The team works closely with product, architecture, platform, data governance, analytics, security and delivery colleagues to turn business priorities into secure, resilient and scalable data services. Its remit spans the full engineering lifecycle, from technical design, build, data modelling, CICD, testing etc through to production ownership of pipelines and continuous improvement.

Our next phase is about strengthening engineering ownership, modernising our data platform and practices, treating data as a product, and building consistency across teams without flattening the different needs of each business domain.

What you will do
  • Software Development: Independently design, develop and deliver production-ready applications, services and APIs with appropriate quality and security controls, including the user-facing products that extend the data platform, data-as-a-service services and data agents etc.
  • Software Design: Design scalable system and data components and participate in architectural decisions, spanning application, API, storage, processing and data serving layers.
  • Data Product Engineering: Design, build and operate data products — curated, documented, contract-backed datasets and data services — that consumers across the organisation and beyond can discover, trust and use without needing to understand the upstream systems.
  • Data Platform Engineering: Build and extend shared data platform capabilities spanning ingestion, storage, processing, orchestration, cataloguing and self-service tooling, so teams across SGX Group can deliver data capabilities safely and at speed.
  • Data Pipeline Development: Independently design, develop and deliver production-ready batch and streaming pipelines with appropriate quality, performance and security controls.
  • Data Quality & Reliability: Design and maintain automated tests, validation, reconciliation and anomaly detection for both applications and data, and own service levels for freshness, completeness and accuracy.
  • Secure Software & Data Development: Deliver software and pipelines that comply with secure development standards and handle sensitive market, client and reference data appropriately.
  • Data Governance & Compliance: Implement lineage, cataloguing, entitlements, access control, retention and privacy controls in line with regulatory and internal governance obligations, and surface them through the tooling that data users interact with.
  • System & Data Integration: Independently develop and support integrations between the data platform and trading, clearing, data services, market operations, risk and enterprise systems.
  • SDLC & Delivery Excellence: Deliver solutions through standardised CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and engineering workflows, applying the same engineering rigour to data assets as to application code.
  • Observability & Production Support: Maintain operational ownership of the applications, pipelines and data services you build, and contribute to production reliability, including incident response.
  • Automation & Productivity: Improve productivity through automation of repetitive engineering and data operations work, including self-service capabilities that reduce manual handling of data requests.
  • Leadership & Mentoring: Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team capability uplift across software and data engineering practice.
  • Agentic AI Engineering: Apply agentic AI across the SDLC to deliver features faster and with better quality, including using agents for requirements clarification, application and transformation code generation, test and data-quality rule creation, code review preparation, documentation, lineage mapping and defect analysis, while retaining accountability for correctness, security and production readiness. Build and curate the governed data foundations that make analytics and AI workloads viable.
  • Collaborate effectively with product, architecture, infrastructure, data governance, analytics and delivery stakeholders, as well as internal and external data consumers, to translate complex requirements into practical, high-quality engineering solutions.

What we are looking for
  • Experience: Proven experience building and supporting production-grade applications across front-end, back-end, APIs and platform services, together with the data pipelines and data platforms behind them, in complex enterprise environments.
  • Track record: Demonstrated ability to deliver well-tested, maintainable software and data products, lead design discussions, contribute to code reviews and drive continuous improvement within a team.
  • Technical stack: Strong hands-on skills with SQL and modern languages and frameworks such as Python, Java, TypeScript or KDB+, including front-end frameworks for building user-facing applications; distributed processing and streaming technologies such as Kafka; orchestration and transformation tooling such as Airflow, Dataform/dbt or equivalents; cloud and data platforms such as GCP/KDB+/Snowflake; open table and file formats such as Iceberg, Delta or Parquet; containerisation and cloud-native services; GitOps, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing; and observability tooling such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Software design: Strong software design fundamentals, including system and component design, API and interface design, domain modelling, design patterns, concurrency, performance, testability and maintainability, applied to both applications and data systems.
  • Data craft: Practical understanding of data modelling, data contracts and schema evolution, data quality engineering, lineage, entitlements, and cost and performance tuning at scale.
  • Standards & environment: Solid understanding of security-by-design, data governance and privacy obligations, resiliency patterns and operational excellence expected in high-availability, regulated environments.
  • Communication & leadership: Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical and data concepts clearly to both engineering and business audiences and work effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Education & certifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information and Communications Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Domain Knowledge: Exposure to financial market infrastructure, including securities and derivatives trading, clearing, settlement, market operations or exchange-related systems, and the data they generate such as market and reference data, trade and position data, and post-trade or regulatory reporting.

Why this role matters
  • You will work on the data that underpins critical market infrastructure, where engineering decisions have direct consequences for the business, its customers, its regulators and the markets it serves. Not many engineering roles carry that weight.
  • The mandate is real. You will shape how data platforms and data products are engineered, owned and evolved, and what data engineering becomes at SGX Group. The work is demanding and the organisation is still changing, which is exactly where the opportunity sits. There are not many chances in a career to build something that outlasts you.
