Its work covers marine casualties, vessel performance, structural issues, offshore assets and technical matters arising in maritime disputes.

The Maritime Consultant will support technical consulting assignments by researching, analysing and documenting marine engineering issues and helping develop clear technical conclusions for clients and project teams.

The Work

  • Assist with investigations into vessel incidents, marine casualties, structural failures and operational problems.
  • Review vessel drawings, technical specifications, inspection records, photographs, reports and other project evidence.
  • Carry out technical research relating to ship structures, propulsion, hydrodynamics, mooring, seakeeping, cargo operations and marine equipment.
  • Support engineering calculations, numerical analysis and technical assessments where appropriate.
  • Assist with site inspections, vessel inspections, sea trials or other field activities associated with consultancy assignments.
  • Organise technical evidence and identify information relevant to the investigation or assessment.
  • Contribute to root-cause analysis of marine or offshore engineering problems.
  • Prepare technical notes, investigation reports, calculations, presentations and supporting documentation.
  • Assist senior consultants in preparing expert reports and technical materials for arbitration, litigation or other dispute-resolution proceedings.
  • Liaise with clients, surveyors, lawyers, engineers and other specialists to obtain information and clarify technical matters.
  • Review applicable class rules, engineering standards, regulations and industry guidance relevant to individual assignments.
  • Support project planning and keep technical work, documentation and deliverables on schedule.

Technical Profile

  • Degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience in maritime consulting, ship design, marine engineering, shipbuilding, offshore engineering, marine surveying or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Sound understanding of marine engineering principles and the ability to interpret technical drawings and vessel documentation.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
  • Comfortable working with engineering calculations, technical data and structured investigations.
  • Familiarity with CFD, FEM/FEA, hydrodynamics, structural analysis or ship performance would be advantageous.
  • Able to distinguish relevant technical evidence from general project information.
  • Good written and spoken English with the ability to communicate technical matters clearly.
  • Willing to participate in occasional inspections, site visits or marine-related field assignments.
  • Careful, objective and methodical when handling technical evidence and preparing reports.

Working Environment

The role combines desk-based technical analysis with project and field exposure. Assignments can vary considerably, so the consultant may move from reviewing vessel documentation and engineering data to assisting with an inspection or preparing material for a technical dispute.
