About the role
As a Principal Fire, Plumbing & Drainage Engineer, you will lead the design of fire protection and suppression systems, fire alarm and detection systems, and plumbing and drainage systems for Tier III/IV data center projects in Hong Kong and the broader APAC region. You will serve as the senior technical authority on fire suppression systems, fire alarm and detection, hydraulic design, plumbing, and stormwater/drainage, driving design strategy from concept through construction. You will mentor project teams, liaise with clients and authorities, and ensure all designs meet the highest reliability, safety and compliance standards expected of mission-critical facilities.
Key responsibilities
Lead design of fire suppression systems for data centers , including pre-action sprinkler, water mist, and clean-agent (gas) suppression tailored to server halls, battery rooms and electrical rooms.
Oversee fire alarm and detection systems , including addressable VESDA, smoke/heat detection and manual call points, integrated with BMS and the site-wide fire safety strategy.
Design domestic cold/hot water, sanitary, soil/waste and stormwater systems , including above- and below-ground drainage networks.
Lead plumbing and drainage design responsibilities, including system sizing and hydraulic calculations, equipment selection, multidisciplinary coordination, code compliance, authority submissions, technical reviews, site inspections, testing and commissioning support.
Perform hydraulic calculations for fire pump sets (electric with diesel/jockey backup), water storage tanks, hydrant and hose-reel systems, ensuring redundancy between primary and backup hydraulic feeds.
Evaluate municipal water supply reliability and design on-site storage and pump backup arrangements to maintain fire protection under single-failure conditions.
Ensure design compliance with NFPA 13/14/20/25/72/130, BS codes, the Hong Kong Code of Practice for Fire Safety in Buildings, and Buildings Department drainage standards.
Lead Fire Services Department (FSD) and Buildings Department (BD) submissions, design reviews and authority approvals.
Participate in HAZOP studies, constructability reviews and design assessments, identifying and mitigating single-point-of-failure risks consistent with Tier III/IV redundancy targets.
Mentor graduate and intermediate engineers, review their work, and build technical capability within the HK team.
About you
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
6-10 years of post-qualification experience, with at least 2 years in a senior or principal design role.
Proven track record on data centers, mission-critical facilities or large commercial/institutional projects in Hong Kong or APAC.
Strong command of NFPA, BS and local HK fire protection and drainage codes and standards.
Hands-on experience with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., Sprinklers, Pipe-Flo, WaterCAD).
Familiarity with Revit MEP / Navisworks for BIM coordination and multidisciplinary clash detection.
Proven client-facing communication skills and authoritative technical judgement.
Direct exposure to Tier III/IV design concepts and TIA/Uptime Institute design principles is strongly preferred.
Experience with hyperscaler design standards (Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft data center criteria) is a strong plus.
