Job Description

Responsibilities

Job Title: Senior Chemist / Team Leader (Quantitative Analysis & Green Chemistry)

Occupation: Industrial / Analytical Chemist

Location: Tuas, Singapore

Availability: Immediate or short notice preferred

About the Role

We transform hazardous industrial waste into high-value resources—recovering base and precious metals, regenerating spent acids, synthesizing industrial minerals, and converting waste plastics into circular oil and chemical feedstocks.

We are looking for a meticulous, energetic Senior Chemist / Laboratory Team Leader with a strong sense of ownership to run our Quantitative Analysis Laboratory and drive applied Green Chemistry R&D.

In our operations, the laboratory is the eyes and ears of the plant. Your analytical data dictates how incoming hazardous waste is fingerprinted, how reactor batches are dosed in real time, and whether our recovered commodities meet strict commercial specifications. We need a hands-on specialist who combines rigorous instrumental analysis with practical industrial chemistry—someone who takes pride in data accuracy, keeps instruments running at peak reliability, and thrives on solving real-world chemical recovery problems.

Key Responsibilities

1. Quantitative Analysis Lab Leadership & QA/QC

  • Lead daily operations in the Quantitative Analysis Laboratory, setting testing priorities and supervising lab technicians across incoming waste characterization, in-process batch control, effluent discharge verification, and final product Certificates of Analysis (COA).

  • Enforce strict QA/QC protocols—including method validation, multi-point calibration, matrix matching, blanks, spikes, and duplicate checks—to guarantee fast, unambiguous, and repeatable analytical results for production and commercial teams.

2. Complex Sample Preparation & Wet Chemistry

  • Execute and refine sample preparation techniques across difficult, non-homogeneous industrial matrices—including spent mineral and mixed acids, metal-bearing sludges, filter cakes, spent catalysts, industrial wastewater, and pyrolysis oils.

  • Perform acid digestions (hotplate/microwave, aqua regia, specialized digestions), extractions, filtrations, gravimetric analysis, volumetric titrations, specific gravity (SG), and pH/ORP profiling in strict accordance with standard operating procedures.

3. Instrumental Analysis & Technical Troubleshooting

  • Operate, calibrate, develop methods for, and perform routine preventive maintenance and first-line troubleshooting across our core analytical suite:

    • ICP (ICP-OES / ICP-MS): Quantitative trace and major elemental analysis of base metals, precious metals, and impurities in digested and aqueous streams.

    • XRF: Rapid and accurate elemental profiling of solid sludges, filter cakes, catalysts, and recovered mineral commodities.

    • GC: Organic characterization, solvent profiling, and hydrocarbon fraction analysis for our Waste Plastic-to-Oil conversion and thermal processes.

    • Karl Fischer (KF) & Analytical Tools: Precise moisture determination and physical-chemical testing across liquid and solid outputs.

4. Applied Green Chemistry & Process R&D

  • Partner with Production and Engineering as part of our Investigative Green Chemistry Team to develop cleaner, higher-yield, and more cost-effective methods for treating hazardous waste and upcycling industrial byproducts.

  • Conduct bench-scale reaction trials—evaluating stoichiometry, selective precipitation, neutralization kinetics, leaching, reagent substitution, and impurity removal—to optimize plant-scale reagent dosing and product purity.

5. Laboratory Administration, Inventory & Asset Ownership

  • Take full ownership of laboratory administration, including the procurement, storage, labeling, and shelf-life tracking of chemical reagents, certified reference materials (CRMs), carrier gases, glassware, and consumables.

  • Manage vendor servicing, calibration schedules, and spare parts inventory to minimize instrument downtime.

6. Lab Safety, EHS Licensing & ISO Governance

  • Enforce strict laboratory safety standards, including fume hood operations, chemical compatibility segregation, SDS management, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe handling/disposal of toxic and corrosive reagents.

  • Maintain regulatory compliance with Singapore government policies and licensing requirements (NEA Toxic Industrial Waste & Hazardous Substances, SCDF flammable materials, and MOM WSH / SS 651 standards).

  • Serve as a core member of the ISO & SHMS team, maintaining audit-ready calibration logs, SOPs, risk assessments, and traceability records for annual ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and SS 651 certifications.

Requirements

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific discipline.

  • Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of hands-on industrial laboratory experience in chemical manufacturing, hazardous waste treatment, hydrometallurgy/mineral processing, petrochemicals, or commercial analytical testing.

  • Instrumental Competence: Proven, independent hands-on proficiency with ICP, XRF, GC, and Karl Fischer (KF)—not just loading samples, but understanding matrix interferences, calibration curves, and basic hardware maintenance.

  • Applied Chemical Knowledge: Strong grasp of inorganic and organic wet chemistry, reaction stoichiometry, and acid-base/redox equilibria, with the problem-solving ability to adapt analytical and treatment methods to variable industrial waste streams.

  • Regulatory Literacy: Working knowledge of Singapore EHS regulations, hazardous chemical licensing (NEA, SCDF, MOM), and ISO laboratory documentation standards.

  • Mindset & Work Ethic: Meticulous, careful, and organized with a strong sense of personal ownership. You care about accuracy, keep a clean 5S laboratory, communicate clearly with plant personnel, and are ready to make a tangible impact in circular resource recovery.
