We are seeking a competent and committed Wastewater Treatment Technician to support the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement of our wastewater treatment facility.
Position Summary
The Wastewater Treatment Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS), ensuring compliance with Department of Environment (DOE/JAS) regulations and company environmental standards.
The successful candidate will oversee daily treatment operations, perform sampling and laboratory testing, monitor equipment performance, execute first-line troubleshooting, maintain accurate operational records, and support continuous plant optimization initiatives.
This position is critical in ensuring uninterrupted manufacturing operations through effective wastewater management and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations
- Operate, monitor, and maintain the Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS) in accordance with DOE requirements and company operating procedures.
- Monitor biological treatment processes including activated sludge systems, aeration tanks, return activated sludge (RAS), waste activated sludge (WAS), and secondary clarifiers.
- Operate physical and chemical treatment systems including Equalization Tanks, DAF units, flocculation systems, chemical dosing systems, filter press units, sludge handling systems, and associated equipment.
- Monitor plant performance and take corrective action whenever abnormal conditions are detected.
- Conduct routine operational checks and optimize treatment efficiency.
- Ensure plant performance consistently meets final discharge standards as stipulated by DOE regulations.
Monitoring, Sampling & Laboratory Analysis
- Collect wastewater samples according to established sampling schedules and procedures.
- Perform routine laboratory testing including:
- pH
- COD
- Suspended Solids (TSS)
- Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
- Sludge Volume Index (SVI)
- Settleability Tests
- Jar Tests
- Interpret laboratory results and recommend operational adjustments where necessary.
- Monitor treatment process stability and identify trends that may impact compliance performance.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, testing instruments, and reagents.
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Conduct routine inspection of all wastewater treatment equipment.
- Monitor operating conditions of pumps, blowers, agitators, compressors, valves, dosing pumps, and instrumentation equipment.
- Perform first-level troubleshooting and corrective actions to minimize downtime.
- Support preventive maintenance activities and coordinate with maintenance personnel when required.
- Report equipment abnormalities and propose corrective improvement actions.
- Ensure treatment equipment is maintained in safe and reliable operating condition.
Environmental Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure plant operations comply with all relevant DOE regulations, permits, and licensing requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Daily plant operation logs
- Laboratory test results
- Chemical consumption
- Equipment inspections
- Maintenance activities
- Environmental monitoring data
- Prepare reports required for internal audits, management reviews, and DOE inspections.
- Support environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
- Immediately report any compliance risks, process abnormalities, or environmental incidents.
Safety, Health & GMP Compliance
- Strictly comply with Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) requirements.
- Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Food Safety standards, and housekeeping requirements.
- Safely handle treatment chemicals including coagulants, flocculants, acids, alkalis, and cleaning chemicals.
- Follow all confined space entry procedures and permit-to-work requirements.
- Participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, and emergency response activities.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve treatment efficiency and reduce operational costs.
- Support wastewater reduction initiatives and sustainability programs.
- Assist in process optimization projects aimed at improving environmental performance.
- Participate in training programs and competency development activities.
- Contribute to achieving company environmental, sustainability, and operational excellence targets.
Requirements
Mandatory Certifications
Applicants must possess the following valid certifications:
- CePIETSO (BP) - Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Biological Processes)
- CePIETSO (PCP) - Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems (Physical Chemical Processes)
- Full Competent Person status recognized by DOE/JAS
- Valid AESP (Authorised Entrant & Standby Person) certification for Confined Space operations
Education
- Certificate, Diploma, or Technical qualification in:
- Environmental Science
- Chemical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Process Engineering
- Water & Wastewater Technology
- Other related technical disciplines
Experience
- Minimum 2 to 5 years of experience in Industrial Effluent Treatment System (IETS) operations.
- Experience in Food & Beverage (F&B), FMCG, Oleochemical, Chemical Processing, Palm Oil, Manufacturing, or related industries is preferred.
- Experience operating biological and physical-chemical treatment systems is highly desirable.
- Experience dealing with DOE compliance requirements and environmental reporting will be an added advantage.
