Job Description

Responsibilities

Research Scientist

Research & Development | Laboratory Services | Scientific Analysis

CET Scientific Services provides laboratory testing, analytical services, research and development support, material characterisation, product testing, environmental analysis and technical troubleshooting. Its R&D work covers a broad range of samples and materials, supported by analytical techniques including chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy and thermal analysis.

The Research Scientist will contribute to scientific investigation and R&D projects by planning experiments, analysing samples and results, and translating technical findings into clear project documentation.

Main Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out laboratory experiments and research activities according to project requirements.
  • Prepare, handle and analyse samples using appropriate laboratory procedures and analytical techniques.
  • Review experimental results and identify meaningful trends, abnormalities or potential areas for further investigation.
  • Support material characterisation, chemical analysis, product testing and failure investigation projects.
  • Select suitable analytical approaches based on sample type, testing objectives and available technical information.
  • Operate or work with laboratory instruments where appropriately trained, including techniques such as FTIR, HPLC, GC-MS, ICP, XRD, SEM or thermal analysis.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records, test data, observations and sample information.
  • Investigate unexpected results, contamination issues, material defects or other technical problems.
  • Conduct literature and technical research to support assigned scientific projects.
  • Prepare research summaries, technical reports, analytical results and project presentations.
  • Communicate findings with colleagues and, where required, explain technical results to clients.
  • Assist with the development or improvement of testing methods and research procedures.
  • Follow laboratory safety, quality-control and documentation requirements throughout experimental work.

What We Are Looking For

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Physics, or another relevant scientific discipline.
  • Previous laboratory, R&D, analytical testing or scientific research experience is preferred.
  • Good understanding of experimental design, scientific methodology and data interpretation.
  • Comfortable working with laboratory instruments and technical testing procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail when handling samples, measurements and experimental records.
  • Able to investigate technical problems in a structured and evidence-based manner.
  • Good scientific writing and communication skills.
  • Capable of working independently on assigned experiments while collaborating with other scientists and technical personnel.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques or material characterisation methods would be an advantage.

The Research Environment

Projects can vary considerably depending on the material, product or technical question being investigated. The role may involve laboratory testing on one assignment, followed by research, failure analysis or product-development work on another. CET's services cover chemical, biological, elemental, microscopic, mechanical, surface and thermal analysis, giving the position exposure to a broad range of scientific applications.

A methodical approach to experimentation, accurate record keeping and the ability to turn laboratory results into useful technical findings are central to the role.
