Catalyst AI is a Malaysian AI and application company. We turn document-heavy, compliance-driven business processes into intelligent, auditable workflows for mid-market companies and corporates, with a focus on retail, financial services and professional services. We are AI-native: we use AI at every step of how we sell, design and build, so a small senior team delivers what used to need a large one. We are a Malaysia Digital (MD) status company with a growing book of clients in regulated sectors.

The Role

As part of our engineering team, you take a client project from the first requirements session through to production. AI tools now carry much of the work that once required a separate business analyst and developer, so one engineer can own the full cycle: requirements, specification, build, testing and deployment.

Our engineering team is flat. Every engineer reports to the Chief Technology Officer and owns their projects end to end, and larger engagements are staffed with a dedicated project team.

What You Will Do

1. Requirements. Work with client stakeholders to understand how their business operates, and translate their problem into clear, testable requirements.
2. Functional specification. Write the functional requirements specification (FRS), and resolve minor design decisions independently so that only material questions return to the client.
3. Prototypes. Use AI tools to produce screen mock-ups and proofs of concept that confirm direction with the client early.
4. Build and testing. Build the solution with AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, test it thoroughly, and support the client through user acceptance testing.
5. Deployment and documentation. Release through CI/CD pipelines, and keep repositories, documentation and specifications in a state that allows a colleague to take over the project seamlessly.
6. Engineering practice. Between client engagements, improve how the team delivers: internal tools, AI-assisted code review, CI/CD and reusable components.

What You Will Bring

1. 3 to 5 years building and shipping software. Candidates with 2 or more years are considered where they have owned real projects end to end.
2. Full-stack web development experience. Our core stack is TypeScript (React, Node.js and NestJS) with PostgreSQL, Docker and GitHub Actions; strong engineers from other stacks who learn quickly are also welcome.
3. Daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools, and the ability to write prompts and specifications that produce reliable results.
4. Confidence with clients: running a requirements session, asking the right questions, and explaining technical decisions in plain language.
5. A genuine interest in how businesses operate: their workflows, their operations, and where time is lost.
6. The ability to work independently: planning your own week, making decisions, and escalating only what genuinely needs a second opinion.
7. Clear written and spoken English. Bahasa Malaysia or Mandarin is a strong advantage.

Advantages: experience at a startup, small company or agency in a multi-role capacity; a background in business analysis, product management or business information technology; hands-on work with large language models (retrieval-augmented generation, agents, document processing); cloud deployment experience on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure.

3.     A meeting with the team. Everyone you would work with takes part, as fit within a small team matters as much as technical skill.
