Operations Manager – Education & Enrichment Operations

Chess Grande Pte Ltd

Company: Chess Grande Pte Ltd
Location: Singapore
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time

About Chess Grande

Chess Grande is a growing chess education company established in Singapore in 2022. We provide enrichment programmes for children through our learning centres, partner schools, preschools, private coaching, holiday camps, tournaments and special events.

We are a small, close-knit company with a lean organisational structure. Although our programmes operate across multiple schools and teaching locations, our internal management team remains relatively small.

As we continue to grow, we are looking for a capable, organised and hands-on Operations Manager to oversee our daily operations, supervise our employees and help us develop stronger operational systems.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a smaller company, where responsibilities are meaningful, teamwork is essential and managers are expected to be actively involved in getting things done.

About the Role

The Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective delivery of Chess Grande's programmes, staffing arrangements, centre operations and customer service.

You will supervise our operational team, coordinate coach deployments, maintain relationships with schools and parents, oversee holiday camps and events, and ensure that operational problems are addressed promptly.

As part of a small management team, this is not a purely desk-based management position. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable supervising employees, visiting schools, coordinating last-minute coach replacements, preparing management reports and personally stepping in when operational situations require attention.

You will also be responsible for developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), establishing reporting systems and ensuring that employees remain accountable for their responsibilities.

The successful candidate should be proactive, resourceful, organised and confident making practical operational decisions independently.

Chess Knowledge Is Not Required

Applicants do not need prior knowledge or experience in chess to qualify for this position.

We are primarily looking for someone with strong operational management, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

Chess Grande has a dedicated coaching team and curriculum leadership responsible for chess-related matters, including teaching standards, curriculum development and coach assessments.

Your primary responsibility will be managing people, coordinating programmes, resolving operational problems and ensuring that our services are delivered professionally.

Experience in chess or chess education would be an advantage, but it is not a requirement.

Candidates from education, tuition, enrichment, student care, childcare and other service-oriented industries are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities1. Business Operations and Programme Delivery

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of Chess Grande's learning centres, school programmes, private lessons and enrichment activities.
  • Ensure programmes are properly staffed, organised and delivered.
  • Monitor operational schedules, programme readiness and upcoming deadlines.
  • Identify and resolve operational problems promptly.
  • Coordinate resources and personnel across different programmes.
  • Provide hands-on operational support when necessary.
  • Ensure smooth coordination between administrative employees, coaches and other departments.

2. Employee Supervision and Team Leadership

  • Supervise and manage Chess Grande's operational employees.
  • Assign responsibilities, establish expectations and monitor performance.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, briefings and performance discussions.
  • Monitor employee attendance, punctuality and accountability.
  • Address operational mistakes, recurring issues and performance concerns.
  • Coordinate employee recruitment, onboarding and training requirements.
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibilities, reporting lines and company procedures.
  • Foster a professional, collaborative and accountable working environment.

As a smaller company, we value managers who lead by example and are willing to work alongside their teams when necessary.

3. Staffing, Scheduling and Coach Deployment

  • Coordinate coach assignments across schools, centres, private lessons, camps and events.
  • Work closely with the Chess Coaching Coordinator to determine suitable coach deployments.

  • Resolve escalated parent concerns and customer service issues.
  • Ensure timely communication and follow-up on outstanding matters.
  • Identify recurring service problems and implement improvements.
  • Maintain professional standards in communication with parents, schools and business partners.

5. Centre and Weekend Operations

  • Oversee operational readiness at Chess Grande's learning centres.
  • Monitor class preparation, coach attendance and programme delivery.
  • Ensure classrooms, equipment and teaching materials are prepared.
  • Resolve immediate operational and customer service issues.
  • Coordinate trials, assessments and other centre activities.

7. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Review existing operational procedures and identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and document practical SOPs for daily operations.
  • Establish clear workflows, checklists and escalation procedures.
  • Implement SOPs across relevant operational functions.
  • Train employees on company procedures and expectations.
  • Monitor employee compliance with established SOPs.
  • Address recurring procedural failures.
  • Regularly review and update SOPs as the company grows.

This includes procedures relating to staffing, coach replacements, scheduling, customer service, school programmes, employee onboarding, centre operations, camps and events.

The Operations Manager will be responsible not only for developing SOPs, but also for ensuring that they are consistently followed.

  • Establish and maintain practical operational reporting systems.
  • Prepare weekly management updates for the Managing Director.

  • Maintain operational trackers, complaint records and action registers.
  • Lead internal operational meetings and follow up on assigned tasks.
  • Identify operational risks and recommend solutions.
  • Report significant developments, unresolved issues and upcoming priorities.
  • Ensure that management information is accurate, organised and readily available.

The Operations Manager will be expected to provide clear updates and recommendations rather than simply report problems.

9. Facilities, Equipment and Logistics

  • Supervise the preparation and maintenance of operational equipment and teaching materials.
  • Coordinate facilities and classroom readiness.
  • Ensure sufficient equipment is available for schools, camps and events.
  • Monitor inventory and equipment movement between locations.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in operations, centre management, programme coordination or a related supervisory role.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising employees and coordinating operational activities.
