The role involves experimental development, quantitative data analysis, AI/ML-enabled inspection, instrumentation and automation for advanced materials, including fusion/nuclear-relevant materials, coatings, metals, composites and additive manufacturing. The engineer will also contribute to project deliverables, industry collaboration and translation of developed technologies toward practical applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct NDT&E experiments using infrared thermography and other advanced imaging/inspection techniques.
  • Develop and validate inspection methodologies for advanced materials, including fusion/nuclear-relevant materials, coatings, metals, composites and additively manufactured components.
  • Perform quantitative analysis and interpretation of NDT data, including AI/ML-based approaches for defect detection and characterization.
  • Support instrumentation, sensor integration, experimental automation and development of intelligent inspection systems.
  • Translate inspection requirements into appropriate experimental, analysis and validation strategies.
  • Contribute to project deliverables, technical reports, publications, industry collaboration and translation of developed technologies toward practical applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Materials, Electrical/Electronic, Mechatronics, Applied Physics, or related disciplines.
  • Strong hands-on experimental skills with experience or interest in NDT, imaging, sensing, instrumentation or materials characterization.
  • Good knowledge of data/signal/image analysis and programming using Python, MATLAB or equivalent.
  • Good understanding of AI/ML and its application to engineering or scientific data.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot experiments, analyse results and communicate technical findings.
  • Experience in infrared/hyperspectral imaging, advanced NDT, automation or sensor integration is advantageous.
  • Experience or knowledge in fusion/nuclear materials, extreme-environment materials, coatings, composites or additive manufacturing is preferred.
  • Experience in industry collaboration, technology translation, prototyping, IP or commercialization is an advantage.
