CLIENT SUMMARY
Our client is an European company and is one of the world's largest independent commodities trading houses by turnover, creating logistics solutions that safely and efficiently move physical energy from where it is sourced and stored to where it is demanded most.
The Power BI Analyst plays a critical role in bridging physical energy trading operations, risk management, and quantitative insights with executive decision-making. Operating within the company global IT ecosystem, you will design, build, and maintain high-performance Power BI dashboards, complex data models (DAX/M), and enterprise reporting solutions.
This role requires deep hands-on expertise in Microsoft Power BI and modern data architectures (Microsoft Azure), alongside strong domain knowledge in energy/physical commodities trading (e.g., physical oil/gas/power, freight, trade lifecycle, risk/PnL, position tracking, and logistics).
RESPONSILBILITIES
- Dashboard & Report Engineering: End-to-end design, development, and maintenance of interactive Power BI dashboards, operational reports, and executive analytics for trading desks, risk management, operations, and middle-office teams.
- Data Modeling & DAX: Develop robust, scalable Star Schema tabular data models; write advanced, optimized DAX measures, calculated columns, and complex Power Query (M) transformations for high-volume commodity datasets.
- Commodity Analytics & Insights: Translate complex trading concepts—such as daily PnL, mark-to-market (MtM) exposure, physical position tracking, freight/vessel schedules, inventory/storage utilization, and trade capture—into actionable visual insights.
- Azure & Enterprise IT Integration: Work closely with global systems infrastructure and cloud engineering teams to interface Power BI with Azure cloud data platforms (Azure Synapse/Data Lake, Azure SQL, Microsoft Fabric), hybrid Active Directory environments, and enterprise databases.
- Row-Level Security (RLS) & Governance: Implement strict Row-Level Security (RLS) rules tied to Azure Active Directory (Microsoft Entra ID) to ensure role-based data privacy across international desks and trading offices.
- Performance Optimization: Monitor, optimize, and tune Power BI report loading speeds, DirectQuery queries, and dataset refresh cycles in accordance with enterprise IT service level agreements (SLAs).
- Business & Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate closely with traders, risk officers, operators, and cross-functional project leads to capture technical specs, gather requirements, and turn raw data into business value.
- Quality Assurance & Documentation: Maintain comprehensive data definitions, workflow documentation, and report lineage to support internal risk audits, compliance checks, and business continuity efforts.
REQUIREMENTS
- Power BI Mastery: 5+ years of hands-on experience building complex enterprise-grade Power BI reports, semantic models, DAX measures, and Power Query flows.
- Commodities / Energy Domain Knowledge: Must have proven background in commodities trading (oil, refined products, LNG, power, metals, or agriculture) or bulk shipping/logistics. Solid understanding of physical trade lifecycles, exposure, PnL reporting, and risk management fundamentals.
- Data Engineering & Cloud Ecosystem:
- Proficient in SQL (writing complex queries, stored procedures, joins, and aggregations).
- Hands-on experience working within Microsoft Azure environment (Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Blob/Data Lake Storage) and integrating Microsoft 365 / Azure AD identity workflows.
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric or automated data pipeline tools is highly advantageous.
- Certifications: Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or Azure Data Engineer certifications are highly desirable.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Analytics, Quantitative Finance, or a related technical discipline.
Soft Skills & Operational Requirements:
- Analytical Mindset: Strong problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and data validation skills.
- Global Collaboration: Proven experience working with international teams across multiple time zones within a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical data models clearly to non-technical business stakeholders.
