ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a senior individual contributor role for a backend engineer who is ready to take genuine ownership of platform architecture and engineering standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering high-performance backend services that underpin critical onboarding platforms operating at scale. Beyond hands-on development, this person will serve as a technical anchor for the team — setting quality benchmarks, guiding architectural decisions, and coaching engineers to raise the overall standard of delivery. The role sits at the intersection of technical depth and delivery leadership, making it well-suited to someone who wants their architectural decisions to have real, lasting impact on platform reliability and security.

YOUR SCOPE

• Lead the architectural design of scalable, high-performance backend systems, making deliberate decisions that prioritise long-term reliability, security, and maintainability.
• Build and maintain production-grade backend services and RESTful APIs, primarily in Java with Spring Boot, while contributing across a broader polyglot stack where applicable.
• Take end-to-end ownership of delivery — from initial design and development through to deployment, post-release monitoring, and ongoing stability. Architect and optimise relational database schemas and queries, addressing performance bottlenecks and ensuring data integrity at scale.
• Lead code reviews with a focus on preventing security vulnerabilities, enforcing best practices, and maintaining engineering quality across the team. Investigate and resolve complex production issues through thorough root-cause analysis, turning incidents into structured improvements.
• Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers, helping to raise technical standards and foster a culture of engineering excellence.
• Collaborate closely with frontend, DevOps, and product stakeholders to deliver secure, well-integrated backend solutions.
• Drive continuous improvement across system design, development processes, and backend engineering practices.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

• Deep proficiency in Java, including strong command of OOP principles, SOLID design principles, and common Design Patterns.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Spring Boot, including a solid understanding of dependency injection, request lifecycle management, and core framework design decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to design and build scalable, end-to-end backend systems encompassing RESTful API design and broader system architecture.
• Thorough grasp of system design fundamentals — covering scalability, performance optimisation, reliability engineering, and maintainability.
• Solid working knowledge of relational databases (SQL), including schema design, query optimisation, and performance tuning techniques.
• Strong analytical and debugging capability, with a systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving complex technical problems.
• Sound understanding of unit testing principles and the ability to define and implement effective test strategies.
• Proven experience guiding junior engineers through mentorship, code reviews, and the active promotion of engineering best practices.
