Software Engineer III

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the delivery of backend systems that support product performance, technical quality, and operational reliability. You will also guide junior engineers and strengthen the team's engineering capabilities.

About the Role
You will own the design, architecture, implementation, and delivery of backend systems within the enterprise integration and messaging stack. Your work will ensure that systems remain reliable, scalable, secure, and aligned with business and regulatory requirements. You will influence technical direction, review the work of other engineers, and support the development of junior team members, with potential progression into technical leadership or engineering management.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of backend microservices, APIs, integration services, and system features.

• Own architecture and technical decisions for assigned modules, ensuring that solutions meet business, security, and performance requirements.

• Conduct code and architecture reviews for peers and junior engineers, providing practical feedback and technical direction.

• Support production systems, troubleshoot critical issues, identify root causes, and improve operational processes.

• Work with Product, Project, Business, and other technical teams to translate requirements into workable technical solutions.

• Contribute to the technology roadmap, engineering standards, integration patterns, and development practices.

• Support hiring, onboarding, coaching, and mentoring activities to strengthen the engineering team.

• Identify technical and delivery risks early, recommend solutions, and take ownership of system and feature outcomes.

Technical Scope

• Backend and web services: Java, Spring Boot, microservices, SOAP services, and REST APIs.

• Enterprise integration: XML, WSDL, batch jobs, schedulers, ETL flows, and common integration patterns.

• Messaging systems: IBM MQ and ActiveMQ.

• Databases: Oracle, MariaDB, or equivalent relational databases, including stored procedures and performance tuning.

• CI and CD: automated pipelines, production releases, and deployment approaches such as blue-green, rolling, and canary deployments.

• Security: secure coding, authentication, authorisation, and controls suitable for banking, payment, and regulated systems.

• Optional scope: mobile backend integrations for Android and iOS applications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

Relevant Work Experience

• At least five years of professional backend engineering experience, including end-to-end delivery of production systems.

• Proven experience designing and implementing scalable, highly available system architecture.

• Hands-on experience with enterprise integration, messaging, APIs, databases, production deployment, and system support.

Technical Expertise

• Strong hands-on backend development experience using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and web services using SOAP or REST.

• Experience with enterprise messaging systems such as IBM MQ and ActiveMQ, together with XML, WSDL, batch processing, schedulers, and ETL flows

• Experience with Oracle, MariaDB, or equivalent databases, including query performance tuning and stored procedures.

• Experience with CI and CD pipelines and production release practices, including blue-green, rolling, or canary deployments.

• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and system optimisation skills.

• Knowledge of secure coding, authentication, authorisation, and regulatory requirements for banking or payment systems, including PCI where applicable.

Required Competencies and Skills

• Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to a capable, collaborative engineering team.

• Ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Strong ownership of architecture, feature delivery, production stability, and operational reliability.

• Sound judgement when identifying risks, evaluating options, and making architecture or design decisions.

• Ability to work across Product, Project, Business, Operations, and Engineering teams.

Preferred and Good to Have

• Exposure to multiple technology stacks or the full software development lifecycle.

• Experience in banking, fintech, payments, or other regulated systems.

• Familiarity with DevOps and site reliability engineering concepts, including service level indicators, service level objectives, and incident response.

• Experience improving cost, performance, or infrastructure efficiency.

• Experience with mobile backend integrations for Android or iOS applications.
