A large technology operation is adding to its Singapore infrastructure engineering team and is now hiring a Server Infrastructure Engineer to keep a fleet of thousands of Linux servers healthy, available and ready for production. The environment runs at very large scale, with dense rows of rack mounted hardware, high speed networks and a constant flow of equipment arriving, entering service and eventually being retired.
This is a hands on engineering role on the data centre floor, built around physical servers rather than desktops, cloud consoles or end user support. Most days centre on diagnosis. A server drops out of service, and you work out whether the cause is a failed drive, a memory module, a network interface or something in the operating system, then restore it. You will also bring new hardware online, loading operating systems onto many machines at once by booting them from the network, and confirming each one is healthy before it is released for use. Because the fleet is so large, doing things by hand does not scale, so you will write and improve Bash and Python scripts that take the repetition out of checks, fixes and data collection. It suits someone who enjoys tracking a fault down to its source, likes working with real hardware, and is comfortable working mainly from the Linux command line.
Key responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve hardware and operating system faults on Linux servers, replacing components such as drives, memory and network cards, and returning each machine to service.
- Load operating systems onto new and repaired servers at scale using network boot provisioning such as PXE (Preboot Execution Environment).
- Confirm each newly built server is production ready by checking its network connections, storage, hardware health and remote management access.
- Use out of band management tools such as IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface), iDRAC or iLO to inspect, reboot and recover servers without needing to be at the rack.
- Troubleshoot server connectivity problems involving IP addressing, VLANs (virtual local area networks), subnets, DNS (Domain Name System) and IPv6.
- Write, run and refine Bash and Python scripts that automate routine checks, repairs and reporting across large numbers of machines.
- Help plan rack layouts and equipment placement so that space, power and network capacity are ready before new hardware arrives.
- Keep asset, location and ticket records accurate, so the team always knows what is installed where and what work has been done.
- Raise and track warranty part returns, known as RMAs (Return Merchandise Authorisations), and work with manufacturers when the same fault repeats across a batch of hardware.
- Securely wipe storage, or arrange its destruction, when servers are retired or relocated.
- Take part in an on call roster, responding to urgent server issues raised by internal teams.
- Document fixes and procedures so recurring problems can be solved faster next time.
About you
- Around two years or more working hands on with physical servers in a data centre, hosting or large infrastructure environment.
- Confidence working in Linux through the command line, on distributions such as RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), CentOS, Ubuntu or Debian.
- Practical experience installing operating systems across many servers using network boot or automated imaging, rather than one machine at a time.
- The ability to read and write Bash scripts, and working Python for automation tasks.
- A methodical approach to isolating faults and deciding whether a problem sits in a component, the firmware, the operating system or the network.
- A solid grounding in networking basics, including MAC (Media Access Control) addresses, subnets and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).
- Familiarity with baseboard management controllers and remote server management interfaces.
- Clear written English and good record keeping habits, with the ability to work well both on your own and as part of a team.
- Willingness to join an on call roster.
- A diploma or degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related technical field.
Highly regarded
- Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Salt or Puppet.
- Background in a hyperscale, cloud provider or large colocation data centre.
- RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) configuration, and firmware or BIOS updates.
- Hands on experience with server platforms from Dell, HPE, Supermicro or Lenovo.
- Mandarin language skills, which are useful when working with some stakeholders.
- Basic data analysis to spot patterns in hardware failures.
- Certifications such as CompTIA Linux+, CompTIA Server+ or RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator).
