We are seeking an experienced and motivated Sales Engineer to strengthen our sales team and support the continued growth of our industrial automation, instrumentation and engineering solutions business.
Position Summary
The Sales Engineer will be responsible for identifying, developing and securing new business opportunities while managing relationships with existing customers.
The successful candidate must be able to understand customers’ operational and technical requirements, recommend suitable solutions, coordinate technical and commercial proposals, and manage opportunities from initial engagement through order award.
This position requires a combination of technical knowledge, commercial awareness, relationship-building skills and a strong drive to achieve sales targets.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development and Sales
- Identify and develop new sales opportunities within the oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, utilities, power and other process industries.
- Promote the company’s portfolio of automation, control, instrumentation, safety, valve, analyser and industrial digitalisation solutions.
- Develop new customers while maintaining and expanding relationships with existing accounts.
- Establish relationships with end users, consultants, engineering companies, EPC contractors, system integrators and procurement organisations.
- Conduct customer visits, technical presentations, product demonstrations and solution discussions.
- Understand customers’ operational challenges and translate them into suitable technical and commercial solutions.
- Monitor upcoming projects, tenders, plant upgrades, maintenance requirements and brownfield or greenfield opportunities.
- Develop and maintain a healthy sales pipeline to meet assigned order booking and revenue targets.
- Follow up actively on enquiries, proposals, tenders and ongoing commercial discussions.
- Negotiate commercial terms within the company’s approved authority and pricing guidelines.
Technical and Proposal Support
- Review customer enquiries, datasheets, specifications, drawings and tender documents.
- Prepare or coordinate technical and commercial proposals in collaboration with the engineering, project and principal teams.
- Conduct basic product selection and application evaluation for instrumentation, control systems, safety systems, valves and related solutions.
- Prepare preliminary bills of materials, compliance statements, proposal clarifications and cost estimates.
- Coordinate with technology principals, manufacturers and internal engineering teams to ensure proposed solutions comply with customer requirements.
- Participate in technical clarification meetings, tender interviews and commercial negotiations.
- Ensure all proposals are technically accurate, commercially competitive and submitted within the required timeline.
- Support the handover of awarded projects to the engineering and project execution teams.
Account and Principal Management
- Maintain strong professional relationships with key customers and stakeholders.
- Develop account plans for assigned customers, market segments or territories.
- Coordinate with principals and technology partners on opportunity development, technical support, pricing and joint customer engagement.
- Provide regular updates to principals and management on opportunity status and market developments.
- Gather market intelligence on competitors, pricing, upcoming projects and customer requirements.
- Represent Solutas at exhibitions, conferences, technical seminars and industry networking events.
Reporting and Sales Administration
- Maintain accurate records of customer engagements, enquiries, quotations and opportunity status.
- Prepare weekly or monthly sales pipeline, forecast and activity reports.
- Track order bookings, revenue forecasts and progress against assigned sales targets.
- Maintain proper documentation of customer correspondence, proposal revisions and commercial commitments.
- Support collection and payment follow-up when required, in coordination with the Finance and Project teams.
- Comply with the company’s commercial, quality, integrity and confidentiality requirements.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation, Control, Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant sales, business development, application engineering or proposal experience.
- Experience within industrial automation, process instrumentation, control systems, safety systems, valves or related engineering solutions is strongly preferred.
- Experience serving the oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, utilities, power or process industries will be an advantage.
Technical Knowledge
Candidates should possess working knowledge in several of the following areas:
- DCS, PLC, SIS, ESD, FGS or ICSS
- Process measurement instruments such as pressure, temperature, flow and level transmitters
- Control valves, actuated on-off valves and valve accessories
- Industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus or Industrial Ethernet
- Functional safety, SIL and hazardous-area applications
- Control system upgrades, migrations and brownfield integration
- Analyser, condition-monitoring or industrial digitalisation solutions
- Basic engineering documentation, including datasheets, specifications, I/O lists, system architecture and bills of materials
Skills and Competencies
- Strong technical sales and consultative selling ability.
- Able to communicate effectively with engineers, operations personnel, management and procurement teams.
- Good presentation, proposal-writing and negotiation skills.
- Commercially aware and able to understand pricing, margins and project risks.
- Self-motivated, resourceful and comfortable developing new accounts.
- Capable of managing multiple opportunities and priorities simultaneously.
- Able to work independently while collaborating closely with internal teams and principals.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Good written and spoken English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- Possession of a valid driving licence and willingness to travel for customer visits and project-related activities.
Preferred Attributes
- Existing industry contacts within PETRONAS, PSC operators, refineries, petrochemical plants, EPC companies or major industrial facilities.
- Experience handling tenders and technical-commercial proposals.
- Familiarity with PETRONAS technical requirements, procurement processes or vendor registration platforms.
- Experience working with automation manufacturers, instrumentation suppliers, valve companies or system integrators.
- A proven track record of achieving sales or order-booking targets.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and develop into a senior sales or business development role.
