Role Description The Lead Automation Engineer will oversee the design, development, and optimization of automation systems and solutions for clients, with a focus on reliability, scalability, and safety. This contract role is based in Damansara in a hybrid work arrangement, combining on-site collaboration with flexibility to work from home. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading automation projects, defining technical requirements, configuring and programming control systems, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices. The role will involve diagnosing complex automation issues, coordinating with cross-functional engineering and project teams, and guiding the implementation of process improvements to enhance system performance. The Lead Automation Engineer will also mentor team members, provide technical documentation, support testing and validation activities, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across automation and robotics solutions.
Qualifications
The Automation Lead – Governance & Standards will spearhead the organization’s enterprise automation framework. This role is responsible for ensuring that all automation initiatives align with the broader IT business strategy, governance policies, and operational excellence standards.
Lead the Automation & Integration team (including Senior Engineers) to design, implement, and manage the full lifecycle of intelligent automation solutions—ranging from traditional RPA (UiPath) to modern workflow orchestration (n8n)—ensuring measurable ROI and operational scalability.
· Core Objectives:
· Lead and govern the organization’s enterprise automation framework, ensuring initiatives align with business strategy and IT governance.
· Establish and maintain automation governance, policies, best practices, and standards for RPA and system integration.
· Oversee the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of automation solutions across enterprise systems.
· Provide leadership and strategic direction to the Automation & Integration team, including Senior Engineers and specialists.
· Ensure initiatives deliver measurable business value through efficiency, cost optimization, and scalability.
· Support digital transformation initiatives by promoting automation adoption and driving a sustainable automation-first culture.
A. Automation Strategy & Governance
· Framework Development: Establish and maintain the enterprise-wide automation governance framework, defining the "Gold Standard" for bot development, security, and deployment.
· Lifecycle Management: Define and enforce standards for the end-to-end automation lifecycle, including process discovery, technical design (TDD), testing (UAT), and production monitoring.
· Compliance & Risk: Ensure all automations comply with Group IT security standards, data privacy regulations, and internal audit requirements. Implement robust credential management and secure API handling.
· Platform Roadmap: Develop the organization’s automation roadmap, identifying opportunities to migrate or integrate legacy processes into modern, high-performance platforms like n8n.
B. Technical Leadership & Operational Oversight
· Team Mentorship: Lead and mentor a team of Senior Engineers and Developers, providing technical guidance on complex JSON transformations, custom node development, and system integrations.
· Solution Architecture: Oversee the architectural design of automation solutions to ensure they are resilient, modular, and easy to maintain.
· Performance Monitoring: Establish KPIs and automated dashboards to monitor bot performance, success rates, and business value delivery.
· Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with business units to identify high-impact automation candidates and work with external vendors (UiPath, ABBYY, etc.) to ensure platform stability.
C. Business Process & Digital Transformation
· Process Discovery: Lead workshops with business users to translate manual workflows into efficient, automated logic.
· Integration Excellence: Oversee the integration of automation tools with core enterprise systems (ERP, Finance, Document Management) using REST APIs, Talend, or middleware.
· Innovation: Stay abreast of AI-driven automation trends (Generative AI, Intelligent Document Processing) and promote their adoption within the organization.
D. Automation Evangelism & Enablement
· Train the Trainer: Design and execute a "Train the Trainer" program to empower departmental automation champions, ensuring the scalability of automation knowledge across the organization.
· Culture Change: Act as a primary advocate for automation, driving mindset shifts and cultural change to encourage business units to proactively identify and propose automation opportunities.
· Community of Practice: Establish and lead an internal Automation Community of Practice (CoE) to share successes, lessons learned, and standardized templates.
· Efficiency: Drive measurable reductions in manual effort and operational costs across key business functions.
· Stability: Ensure zero-downtime for critical automated workflows through proactive governance and error-handling standards.
· Culture & Capability: Strengthen internal digital maturity by building a self-sustaining network of automation-literate staff and trainers.
· Scalability: Build a "pluggable" automation architecture that supports the organization’s strategic growth and digital maturity.
Education & Experience
· Academic: Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
· Experience: 6 to 12 years of relevant experience in enterprise IT, with at least 4 years specifically focused on automation development and governance.
· Proven Track Record: Experience leading automation teams and managing organizational change programs in a corporate environment.
Technical Competencies
· Orchestration & RPA: Proficiency in n8n (Workflow orchestration) and UiPath. Deep understanding of node-based logic and custom expressions.
· Integration & APIs: Expertise in RESTful APIs, JSON data structures, and integration platforms (e.g., Talend).
· IDP & Data: Experience with Intelligent Document Processing (e.g., ABBYY FlexiCapture) and data transformation logic.
· Governance Tools: Familiarity with Git/Version Control, CI/CD for automation, and enterprise security protocols (OAuth2, Vaults).
Soft Skills
· Strategic Thinking: Ability to align technical automation tasks with high-level business objectives.
· Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts for C-suite and non-technical stakeholders.
· Influence & Change Management: Demonstrated ability to drive cultural change and influence stakeholders across various levels of the organization.
