Job Description

Responsibilities

This role wil be responsible for the development, implementation, operations, and evaluation of trauma services, civil emergency preparedness, and clinical research support for General Surgery.

The role provides clinical governance, operational oversight, performance improvement and strategic leadership for trauma services, while supporting hospital-wide civil emergency readiness, NHG emergency laparotomy audit and clinical research activities within the Department of General Surgery.

MAJOR DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES

(A)

SPECIFIC

1.0 Trauma Service Performance Improvement and Clinical Governance

1.1 Collaborate with trauma program director, surgeons, physicians and other health care professionals to provide clinical and systems oversight for trauma patient care, ensuring the provision of efficient, quality, and cost-effective care.

1.2 Develop and oversee the trauma performance improvement in collaboration with the Trauma Director.

1.3 Oversee hospital compliance with national trauma standards, protocols and workflows across the continuum of trauma care.

1.4 Develop, implement, and monitor trauma-related policies, procedures, and clinical pathways, ensuring alignment with MOH and National Trauma Committee requirements.

1.5 Serve as the secretary for the hospital’s Trauma Committee and a liaison between the trauma service and hospital administration. Coordinate and schedule Trauma Committee meetings, multidisciplinary case review meetings. Coordinate preparation for national trauma designation site visits, audits, and regulatory reviews. Prepare and present hospital trauma data for the 2-monthly meetings.

1.6 Lead the identification, investigation, reporting, and follow-up of trauma-related incidents, adverse events, and quality-of-care issues, while maintaining strict confidentiality.

1.7 Prepare and submit annual reports to hospital leadership on trauma performance, outcomes, and research and improvement initiatives.

1.8 Act as a point of reference for trauma operations and performance improvement initiatives.

2.0 Trauma Registry and Data Governance

2.1 Support trauma database coordinators responsible for:
  • Injury coding using Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS)
  • Data validation and quality assurance
  • Registry completeness and accuracy
2.2 Analyse trauma data to identify trends, outcomes, gaps in care, and opportunities for performance improvement and strategic planning.

3.0 NHG Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA)

3.1 Identify patients who fulfil inclusion criteria for NELA and provide data entry support as the NELA coordinator

3.2 Extract and complete the NELA Coordinator SmartText in EPIC which includes clinical outcomes data for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, including details on post-operative care, complications and discharge

4.0 Civil Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Support

4.1 Support and assist in the development, implementation, and review of hospital civil emergency and disaster preparedness policies, with specific emphasis on surgical and trauma readiness.

4.2 Collaborate with hospital emergency preparedness committees to:

  • Support mass casualty incident (MCI) planning
  • Participate in tabletop exercises, drills, and simulations
  • Review post-incident and post-exercise reports
4.3 Support operational and clinical planning to ensure that the surgical departments within the Surgical Division maintain civil emergency readiness and surge demands.

(B)

GENERAL

1.0 Clinical Research and Quality Improvement Support (General Surgery)

1.1 Provide administrative, operational, and data support for clinical research and quality improvement initiatives within the Department of General Surgery and international collaborations.

1.2 Support surgeons and clinical teams in:
  • Research planning
  • Ethics submissions and regulatory documentation
  • Data extraction, cleaning, and analysis
  • Audit and quality improvement studies
1.3 Facilitate the use of registry and clinical data to support outcomes research, audits, and publications, while ensuring data governance and confidentiality.

2.0 Education and Training

2.1 Support hospital-level transdisciplinary education and training activities related to trauma care and civil emergency preparedness.

3.0 Systems Development and Collaboration

3.1 Support the development and optimization of Epic reports for trauma, surgical services, and performance monitoring.

3.2 Collaborate with other departments to determine data, reporting, and operational needs related to trauma.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

(A)

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • A good degree in Nursing, Allied Health or Biomedical Sciences and its related field
  • Domain knowledge with at least four (4) years of relevant work experience in clinical/hospital setting, preferably in the areas of emergency/critical care/trauma/perioperative care or equivalent
  • Experience in databases and knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to perform data analytics to derive insights to facilitate decision-making by the management team
  • Familiar with MS Office applications
  • Strong ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
