Job Description

Responsibilities

1. Nursing Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate nursing care for patients undergoing surgery, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care.
  • Prepare the operating theatre, surgical instruments, equipment, medications and consumables according to the operation list and surgeon’s requirements, and ensure the theatre is clean, safe and ready for use.
  • Verify patient identification, surgical procedures and required documents, and comply with Safe Surgery practices and relevant SOPs.
  • Assist the anaesthetist, surgeon and other healthcare professionals during surgery, including patient transfer, positioning, anaesthesia preparation and operation procedures.
  • Perform scrub nurse duties, including preparation and handling of instruments, monitoring of surgical counts, specimen handling, documentation and proper disposal of clinical and infectious waste.
  • Provide post-operative care by monitoring patients’ vital signs, airway, oxygenation, wounds, drainage and IV infusion, and report any abnormal findings or significant incidents promptly.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments, monitor patients’ responses and report any changes in condition to the Nurse Manager or Doctor.
  • Complete all required nursing and patient care documentation accurately and ensure proper handover of patients to the relevant ward or healthcare staff.
  • Clean, disinfect, sterilize and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, and replenish consumables and medications after each operation.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate stock levels, expiry dates and proper storage of medications, instruments and consumables to minimize wastage.
  • Provide guidance and support to co-workers, participate in surgical planning and coordinate patient care with doctors, patients, families and other healthcare professionals.
  • Comply with hospital policies, nursing procedures, infection control, occupational safety and patient safety requirements, and perform other duties or standby assignments as directed by the Nurse Manager or Head of Department.

2. Patient-Centred Care

  • Provide appropriate emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients and their families, and respond to their enquiries and needs professionally.

3. Quality & Safety

  • Maintain a safe clinical environment, ensure accurate documentation and patient confidentiality, and comply with hospital, nursing, infection control and safety policies.

4. Inventory Management

  • Monitor stock levels, expiry dates, storage and usage of medications, instruments and consumables to ensure proper inventory control and minimise wastage.
