GAS ENGINEER
Location: Semenyih, Selangor / Project Sites
Department: Engineering / Projects
Reports To: Management / Head of Engineering
Job Purpose
The Gas Engineer will serve as the company's Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) registered Gas Engineer / Competent Person in support of the company's registration and operations as a Class A Gas Contractor.
The successful candidate must possess a valid Gas Engineer Certificate of Competency and registration with Suruhanjaya Tenaga Malaysia, with the appropriate competency, scope and endorsements to undertake works involving Natural Gas (NG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
The Gas Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that gas pipeline and gas installation works are designed, installed, tested, commissioned, operated and maintained in compliance with the Gas Supply Act 1993, Gas Supply Regulations 1997, Suruhanjaya Tenaga requirements, applicable Malaysian Standards, codes and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
1. Suruhanjaya Tenaga Competent Person
Act as the company's registered Gas Engineer and Competent Person with Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
Support and maintain the company's Class A Gas Contractor registration with Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
Ensure continuous validity and timely renewal of the Gas Engineer competency and registration.
Liaise directly with Suruhanjaya Tenaga on technical submissions, approvals, inspections and compliance matters.
Ensure all gas works undertaken by the company are within the scope and limitations of the applicable ST competency registrations.
2. Natural Gas & LPG
Provide technical competency and supervision for gas pipeline and installation works involving:
Natural Gas (NG)
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Gas distribution piping systems
Industrial gas installations
Pressure regulating and metering systems
Gas trains and associated equipment
Gas storage and distribution facilities where applicable
Above-ground and underground gas piping
Associated valves, regulators, safety devices and instrumentation
3. Engineering & Design
Review, prepare and/or endorse gas pipeline and gas installation designs where permitted under the applicable ST competency.
Review P&IDs, piping layouts, isometrics, equipment layouts and technical specifications.
Review pipe sizing, pressure requirements, pressure drops and gas flow requirements.
Review selection of piping materials, valves, regulators, meters and associated equipment.
Ensure designs comply with statutory requirements, applicable standards, codes and client specifications.
Provide technical input during tendering, estimation and project planning.
4. Installation & Construction
Provide competent technical supervision for gas pipeline and gas installation works.
Ensure installation works comply with approved drawings, specifications and statutory requirements.
Monitor contractors, subcontractors, supervisors and Gas Fitters involved in gas installation works.
Ensure proper material control, installation practices and quality requirements are maintained.
Coordinate with Project Managers, Construction Managers, QA/QC and HSE personnel.
5. Testing & Commissioning
Supervise and/or witness pressure testing, tightness testing, purging and commissioning of gas systems.
Verify that testing procedures comply with statutory and technical requirements.
Review and endorse relevant test documentation where authorised.
Ensure gas systems are safe and compliant before commissioning and operation.
Coordinate statutory inspections and approvals with Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
6. ST Submission & Certification
Prepare, review, sign and/or endorse relevant documents within the authority granted by the candidate's ST competency, including:
Gas pipeline and installation plans
Technical submissions
Certificates of Completion
Test Certificates
Testing and commissioning documentation
Approval to Operate documentation
Maintenance and inspection records
Other documentation required by Suruhanjaya Tenaga
7. Maintenance & Compliance
Develop and review preventive maintenance requirements for gas installations.
Inspect existing gas installations and identify non-compliance, defects or unsafe conditions.
Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
Ensure maintenance and repair activities are undertaken by appropriately competent personnel.
Maintain statutory documentation and records required by Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
8. Safety & Risk Management
Ensure all gas works are undertaken according to applicable safety requirements.
Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, JSA and risk assessment activities where required.
Identify gas leakage, pressure, ignition and other gas-related hazards.
Ensure emergency response and isolation procedures are established for gas installations.
Work closely with the HSE Department to maintain safe gas operations.
Mandatory Qualifications
Candidates must possess:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a recognised institution.
Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) where required for Gas Engineer competency.
Valid Suruhanjaya Tenaga Certificate of Competency as a GAS ENGINEER.
Valid registration with Suruhanjaya Tenaga as a Gas Competent Person.
Appropriate ST competency/endorsement allowing the candidate to undertake the required scope involving:
Natural Gas (NG); AND
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Minimum 2 years of relevant working experience in gas pipeline and/or gas installation works, or such higher experience as required by the company.
Practical experience in industrial gas piping, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance.
Preferred Experience
Preference will be given to candidates with:
5 years or more experience in Natural Gas and LPG systems.
Previous experience acting as the competent person for an ST registered Class A Gas Contractor.
Experience dealing directly with Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
Experience preparing and endorsing ST submissions and statutory documentation.
Experience in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Power, Manufacturing or heavy industrial projects.
Knowledge of applicable Malaysian and international gas piping standards and codes.
Experience with gas pressure regulating, metering, distribution and safety systems.
Important Licensing Requirement
This position requires an existing and valid Suruhanjaya Tenaga Gas Engineer competency.
Candidates must provide copies/details of their:
Suruhanjaya Tenaga Gas Engineer Certificate of Competency
Current ST Competent Person registration
ST registration/competency number
Certificate validity/expiry date
Scope, restrictions and endorsements stated on the ST certificate
Evidence that the competency is applicable to Natural Gas and LPG installations
BEM Professional Engineer registration
Candidates without the required Suruhanjaya Tenaga Gas Engineer competency will not be considered for this position.
