Responsibilities

Job Purpose :

  • In the Cluster Delivery Organization, Business Specialists, Business Experts, Engineer Specialists, Engineers, Administrators and Product Owners work together in a team. Agile methods enable a fast and flexible response to changing conditions and customer needs through an iterative approach and continuous development of new solutions.

Role overview:

This is an entry-level, development-focused role for a Trainee Unix Administrator joining the GS-TF DC & BI Unix team. It suits a fresh graduate or someone with 1–2 years of experience who has fundamental knowledge of operating systems, networking and storage and wants to build a career as a Unix systems administrator. The trainee works under close supervision and structured guidance, learning to administer and support the team's IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris environments, and progresses toward the Junior Unix Administrator role.


Key Activities:

Performed under supervision and structured guidance, with growing independence over time:

  • Assist with the day-to-day administration and monitoring of IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris servers, under supervision.
  • Support 1st-level incident handling and ticket resolution; escalate to senior administrators with guidance.
  • Perform routine health checks and basic system monitoring for performance, stability and availability.
  • Help install, configure and update operating-system packages and software, following the defined processes (in non-production and, with supervision, production environments).
  • Assist with user, group and basic access-management requests.
  • Support patching activities under guidance, following organizational patching guidelines.
  • Learn and apply basic shell scripting to automate simple, repetitive tasks.
  • Maintain accurate system and configuration documentation (Asset Database).
  • Support server build, migration and decommissioning tasks within the team.
  • Adhere to security standards and operational procedures; raise issues promptly.
  • Participate actively in team ceremonies, knowledge-sharing sessions and structured training.
  • With growing experience, join the on-call / out-of-hours rotation under supervision.


Specialist knowledge (work experience, further qualification):


Essential:

  • 0–2 years of professional experience; fresh graduates are welcome.
  • Fundamental understanding of operating-system concepts – Unix / Linux file systems, processes, permissions, the shell and basic commands.
  • Fundamental networking knowledge – TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing and switching basics, ports and firewalls, and basic connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Basic storage concepts – disks, partitions, file systems, volume management and RAID, with awareness of SAN / NAS.
  • Basic command-line and shell-scripting aptitude.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and a genuine eagerness to learn.
  • Good communication and teamwork; able to follow processes and document work clearly.2.


Desirable:

  • Hands-on exposure to Linux / Unix administration (academic, lab, internship or homelab).
  • Familiarity with IBM AIX and / or Oracle Solaris.
  • Awareness of virtualization (LPAR, Solaris Zones, VMware) and cloud (AWS / Azure / GCP) concepts.
  • Scripting in Python; basics of version control (Git).
  • Awareness of ITIL / IT service-management concepts (incident, change).
  • Entry-level certifications such as CompTIA Linux+, LPIC-1, RHCSA or LFCS.


Education & experience:

University / University of Applied Sciences degree or equivalent; 0–2 years of professional experience; a demonstrable interest in becoming a Unix systems administrator.



NOTE: Successful candidates will be employed on a 6-months contract directly under Commerz Global Service Solutions Sdn Bhd. Upon completion of the Corporate Trainee Program, permanent employment will be offered based on the overall performance evaluation throughout the 6 months program.
