ResearchAssistant / Senior Research Assistant
RoleOverview
We are seeking a ResearchAssistant / Senior Research Assistant where in the role spans softwaredevelopment, applied AI/machine learning, robot autonomy and systemsintegration — developing algorithms and deploying them on physical robotplatforms in laboratory and real-world settings.
KeyResponsibilities
• Software development — design,develop and maintain robot software in Python and C++ within ROS / ROS 2,including simulation environments, data pipelines and supporting tools.
• AI and machine learning — implement,train and evaluate models for perception and decision making; apply deep,reinforcement and imitation learning, and support sim-to-real transfer ontohardware.
• Robot autonomy — developand tune localisation, mapping (SLAM), path and coverage planning, motioncontrol and obstacle avoidance for operation in dynamic environments.
• Systems integration — integratesensors, actuators, embedded controllers and compute units into complete robotsystems; bring up, calibrate and troubleshoot hardware.
• Testing and deployment — planand run laboratory experiments and field trials at deployment sites, includingcommissioning, on-site debugging and analysis of trial data.
• Research output — contributeto technical reports, milestone deliverables, demonstrations and publications;maintain documentation and comply with institutional safety and researchintegrity requirements.
Requirements
Essential
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, ComputerScience, Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics or arelated discipline.
• Strong programming ability in Python and/orC++; working knowledge of ROS / ROS 2 and core robotics concepts.
• Familiarity with machine learning fundamentalsand a modern deep learning framework (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow).
• Competence with Linux, Git and standarddevelopment tooling; hands-on aptitude with robot hardware and sensors.
• Good written and spoken English; willingnessto conduct trials at off-campus deployment sites.
Desirable
• Experience with mobile or service robotautonomy stacks, computer vision, sensor fusion, or simulators such as Gazeboor Isaac Sim.
• Exposure to embedded and edge computeplatforms (e.g. NVIDIA Jetson), Docker, or full-stack development.
• Publications, open-source contributions, orprior research laboratory and field deployment experience.
