Responsibilities

About the role

This role involves supervising cleaning operations at a museum, with responsibility for maintaining galleries, exhibition spaces, offices, facilities and public areas to the highest standards. The position requires careful management of cleaning activities to protect textile collections, artifacts and cultural items while ensuring all work complies with established procedures and safety protocols.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise cleaning work and schedule daily and weekly tasks for cleaning staff

  • Ensure galleries, exhibition spaces, offices, toilets, storage areas and public spaces remain clean

  • Conduct hygiene inspections before and after museum operating hours

  • Ensure cleaning work follows established standard operating procedures

  • Ensure cleaning methods do not damage textiles, traditional clothing, embroidery or exhibition materials

  • Control use of chemicals, fragrances, cleaning materials and equipment near artifacts

  • Report immediately any damage, spills, pest activity or unusual conditions

  • Minimise dust levels as it can impact textile collections, with special attention to exhibition spaces, display cases, shelves, floors and hard-to-reach areas

  • Monitor cleanliness of collection storage areas and report humidity, leakage or mould issues to relevant parties

  • Allocate tasks and monitor staff performance, provide safety briefings and correct work methods

  • Ensure staff use appropriate PPE and equipment

  • Manage staff attendance, discipline, leave and replacements as needed

  • Maintain adequate stock of cleaning materials, PPE and equipment

  • Store chemicals safely according to safety requirements

  • Inspect condition of cleaning machines and equipment and report damage

  • Ensure emergency routes, exits and critical areas are not blocked

  • Know procedures for fire, flood, water leaks and other emergencies

  • Handle water or chemical spills immediately, especially near collections

  • Prepare hygiene inspection records and cleaning material and equipment usage records

  • Prepare reports on damage, incidents and corrective actions

  • Provide regular reports to museum management and supervisory officers from headquarters

About you

  • Minimum SPM/SVM or related qualification, depending on position scheme

  • Experience in cleaning, housekeeping, facilities or supervision is an advantage

  • Experience in public buildings, museums, galleries or cultural institutions is a further advantage

  • Have leadership and staff management skills

  • Meticulous and have high awareness of hygiene standards

  • Understand basic use of chemicals and cleaning equipment

  • Able to prepare work schedules and reports

  • Have good communication skills

  • Able to work according to standard operating procedures and safety instructions

  • Willing to work shifts and weekends if museum operations require

  • Meticulous and careful when working near artifacts

  • Understand that cleanliness cannot be achieved by compromising collection safety

  • Able to work cooperatively with curators, conservation officers, security and facilities management
