Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Engineering Design and Calculations
- Develop and review mechanical and piping designs, P&IDs, GA and piping layout drawings, isometrics, BOMs and datasheets in line with project specifications, client requirements and applicable codes (e.g. ASME B31.3 / B31.8, ASME VIII, API, ISO/EN).
- Perform engineering calculations including pipe wall thickness, pressure rating, flange and branch reinforcement, pipe support, pressure drop, flow and line sizing.
- Carry out or coordinate pipe stress and flexibility analysis (e.g. CAESAR II) and structural/skid checks where required.
- Select and specify piping materials, valves, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolting and instruments; prepare piping material specifications and valve lists.
- Guide draughtsmen/designers and check drawings for accuracy, constructability, maintainability and compliance before issue.
2. Technical Procurement and Vendor Coordination
- Prepare technical specifications, material take-offs and requisitions for equipment, valves, piping and bulk materials.
- Conduct technical bid evaluations and clarify vendor queries; recommend technically acceptable suppliers.
- Review vendor drawings, calculations, certificates and data books for compliance with specifications.
- Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and vendor inspections as required.
3. Fabrication and Construction Support
- Issue approved-for-construction drawings and resolve technical queries (TQs) from the workshop and site promptly.
- Work with Production on fabrication sequence, welding requirements, dimensional control and constructability.
- Review and support WPS/PQR, NDT, heat treatment and painting/coating requirements with QA/QC.
- Manage engineering changes, deviations and concessions through a controlled change process; maintain redline and as-built records.
- Support site surveys, installation, tie-ins, commissioning and troubleshooting when required.
4. Testing, Inspection and Documentation
- Prepare hydrostatic/pneumatic pressure-test packs, leak-test and valve-test procedures, and witness tests with clients and third-party inspectors.
- Prepare and control engineering documents: design basis, calculation reports, procedures, ITPs input, MDR/data books and as-built drawings.
- Ensure document revisions, transmittals and approvals follow the project document-control system.
- Coordinate with Professional Engineers, authorities and certifying bodies on submissions and approvals where required.
5. Quality, HSE and Continuous Improvement
- Ensure designs meet applicable codes, standards, statutory and client requirements, and company quality procedures.
- Participate in HAZOP, design reviews, risk assessments and model/3D reviews; incorporate safety-in-design principles.
- Participate in non-conformance reviews, root-cause analysis and corrective-action implementation.
- Identify opportunities to standardise designs, reduce material and fabrication cost, and improve lead time and quality.
- Develop and maintain engineering standards, templates, calculation sheets and lessons-learned records.
Education and Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Diploma with strong relevant experience considered)
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration or progress towards it is an advantage
- Relevant training in piping design, pipe stress analysis, pressure vessels, or gas/oil & gas systems is an advantage
Skills and Experience
- At least 5 years of mechanical and piping engineering experience in oil & gas, gas distribution/metering, petrochemical, utilities or process-plant fabrication
- Working knowledge of piping and pressure-equipment codes and standards (ASME B31.3 / B31.8, ASME VIII, ASME B16 series, API 6D/598)
- Experience with skid-mounted packages, metering or regulating stations, valves and pressure testing is highly desirable
- Proficient in AutoCAD; experience with 3D design (e.g. AutoCAD Plant 3D, SolidWorks, Inventor) and CAESAR II preferred
- Able to prepare and interpret P&IDs, GA drawings, isometrics, BOMs, datasheets and vendor documents
- Good understanding of materials, welding, NDT, fabrication and construction practices
- Proficient in MS Office; familiarity with document-control and project systems
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and report-writing skills
- Able to manage multiple projects to deadlines while maintaining safety, quality and cost discipline
