Secondary School classroom teachers are responsible for empowering each student to demonstrate courage and confidence in response to challenges while developing the necessary skills to adapt and thrive as learners.
Secondary School classroom teachers understand the crucial role relationships play in creating meaningful learning experiences for students, both inside and outside of the classroom. The successful applicant will be an experienced Secondary School teacher who is passionate about using inquiry-based pedagogy within their classrooms. They motivate and inspire students to acquire knowledge and skills, with the goal of building conceptual understanding and critical thinking. He/she will closely collaborate with their teaching teams, learning support teacher, specialist teachers, curriculum leaders, coaches, and administrators to design integrated learning opportunities that meet the needs of each learner allowing for greater student choice, and crafted using the principles of differentiation.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Professional Knowledge
- The breadth and depth of knowledge of the discipline(s) and understanding of HKIS' Shared Philosophy of Education. For HKIS educators this includes planning for instruction, reflection on curriculum content, knowledge of tools and resources, developmental characteristics of students, and current pedagogy.
Instructional Strategies
- The means by which classroom teachers establish a culture for learning, engage students in learning and deliver content. This includes flexibility in the choice of materials, use of appropriate technology and a variety of presentation, grouping, and pacing techniques in response to student learning needs.
Management
- How time and resources are prioritized, organized, and allocated to provide an effective learning environment. Involves organizing one's own work, planning work for others, anticipating needs, and adjusting resources accordingly. For HKIS educators, this includes classroom management.
Assessment
- The monitoring of student understanding through a balanced program of developmentally appropriate formative and summative assessments aligned to UbD Stage 1 elements (including articulated standards, enduring understandings, knowledge and skills, misunderstandings, and academic vocabulary). HKIS faculty provide feedback to students and parents to promote learning and the use of assessment results in planning and instruction.
Communication
- The verbal and non-verbal articulation of messages within the HKIS community (students, parents, colleagues) both informal and informal situations provides clarity and accuracy of information. HKIS educators are highly attuned to the choice of the most appropriate medium and active listening to facilitate a mutual understanding of needs, issues, and concerns.
Collaboration and Professional Practice
- The manner in which individuals build, promote, and maintain strong learning communities builds professional and reciprocal relationships. Sharing information about students, curriculum, and resources enhances the success of the HKIS community.
Other
- Undertake other duties and functions as required that will impact and strengthen the contributions of the department and overall operations of the school.
Minimum requirements and qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelors degree in relevant subject area, Masters Degree preferred
- Qualified Teacher Certification
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of full time teaching in the subject area
- Experience in a leading international school with an American-style education preferred
Required skills:
- Excellent knowledge of the subject content and current pedagogy
- Excellent knowledge of the developmental needs of students in Grades 6-8
- Strong grounding in understanding and practice of Standards Based Approaches to instruction and assessment
- Strong communication skills; ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with a diverse community
- Adept at using educational and classroom technology
- Strong organizational and time management skills
