Role Description The Research Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based at SMU’s city campus in Singapore. This position involves designing, implementing, and testing computational and experimental solutions to support research projects, particularly in computer science and related scientific domains. The Research Engineer will work closely with faculty and research teams to develop algorithms, build prototypes, analyze data, and document methods and findings for publications and presentations. Daily tasks include conducting literature reviews, supporting R&D activities in labs, maintaining research infrastructure and tools, and collaborating on project planning, milestones, and reporting. The role also involves contributing to grant proposals, preparing technical reports, and ensuring that project deliverables meet high standards of rigor and reproducibility.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in Computer Science, including programming, software development, and computational problem-solving.
  • Experience in Research and Development (R&D) and applied Research, with the ability to design experiments, evaluate results, and iterate on solutions.
  • Background in optimization and quantitative fields, with comfort working on modeling, simulation, or data-driven scientific investigations.
  • Knowledge of Algorithms, including design, analysis, optimization, and implementation in practical research contexts.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline;
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java) and familiarity with common development tools and version control.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills, with attention to detail and research integrity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and manage multiple project tasks and deadlines.
  • Prior experience in academic or industrial research environments and exposure to working with international collaborators is beneficial.
