About iHandal Energy Solutions

iHandal Energy Solutions is a Malaysian sustainable engineering company focused on helping commercial and industrial clients improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and lower carbon emissions.

Founded in 2009, iHandal provides turnkey sustainable engineering solutions — with customised Mechanical & Electrical systems across water heating, process cooling, air conditioning, and waste heat recovery applications. The company is known for its proprietary HeatFuse technology, which captures and repurposes wasted heat, helping clients improve energy performance and operational savings.

Today, iHandal serves clients across sectors including hospitality, healthcare, residential, and industrial manufacturing, with solutions deployed across Malaysia and the wider Asia Pacific region.

About the Role

Are you a Software Engineer with a passion for learning, an ability to question the status-quo, and a desire for a supportive, cutting edge, can-do culture and workplace? Are you inspired by new challenges? Do you feel comfortable asking for help when you need it (and helping others when you can)? If so… we might be the perfect team for you to join!

We’re searching for a pioneer Software Engineer, who has at least 1-2 years of experience working on modern web, app, API, or similar systems, utilizing the latest technical tools and frameworks. Our software development team is just getting off the ground, but we have an ambitious roadmap, and the tools and strategy to see it through. We’re just missing you!

We are an agile shop (scrum or kanban, depending on the project), with goals of one day using TDD for new projects. We deploy to a hybrid environment (AWS and on premise), believe in fully automated regression testing, and decide on technical matters / decisions within the team.

Compensation

RM 6,000 – RM 8,000 per month, commensurate with experience.

Why iHandal

Software development here is not a siloed function. You will work alongside the industrial, electrical, mechanical, and other engineers who design our products and the production team who builds them, which means your participation actually shapes how things get built.

As iHandal scales its manufacturing output, software has to play an ever growing role in enabling efficient scaling, ensuring accurate outcomes, and delivering real-time visibility. The incumbent will be well placed to take on more ownership, and eventual leadership responsibilities, as we continue our journey.

You will also be part of a company whose entire product line exists to reduce energy waste. Every unit we design, deploy, monitor, and maintain, is one that will go on to measurably lower a client’s energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Why This Role Matters

Our software engineers focus on building and deploying new systems, capabilities and features that allow our customers to have better visibility and outcomes with our products, enable our team members to handle the growing volume of new business efficiently and accurately, and position the company as a tech-enabled market leader in the green energy space.

What You Will Be Responsible For

Roadmap

You will work on prioritized long-term projects that have significant positive impact for our customers and coworkers. Your efforts will not only strengthen our current market position, but also enable significant expansions into other related verticals in the future.

CICD Automation and Documentation

You will have the opportunities to both suggest and deliver improvements to our continuous delivery platform, our regression test automation, and our system documentation for new and on-going projects. You will also have to participate (both as presenter, and commenter) in code reviews at regular intervals for merging and eventually deploying to our staging environment.

Quality

The team shares the responsibility of maximizing our uptime, which involves building every new system with automated disaster recovery enabled. We will also measure our uptime performance, and in rare occasions where our software has critical failures, we are responsible for researching and producing root cause analysis documentation, as well as mitigation plans.

Innovation

As software engineers, we will have the opportunity to come up with ideas both in terms of new opportunities, as well as new solutions for existing challenges. In other words, we are an equal partner in shaping our roadmap based on what we perceive is ahead for the business.

Using AI

We encourage using AI tools to help make work more efficient, and to automate repetitive tasks.

We do not, however, allow “vibe-coding,” wherein the person submitting or merging the code has not themselves reviewed and fully understood how, and why, it does what it does. You will be responsible for your code, however you generate it, and if it’s not up to standard, it will reflect on you, not the tool(s) you used.

What You Will Need to Have

Required Abilities and Experience

• Some familiarity with using CICD (branching, merging, code reviews, etc.), using some form of git.

• Some experience with an object-oriented high level language; we use ruby (and rails), and javascript (client side), but if you don’t, no worries, it’s easy (and fun) to learn.

• At least user-level capabilities with SQL. We use Postgres, but experience with any RDBMS would be fine.

• Able to understand and interpret manual SOPs, and come up with designs to help automate them to some degree.

• Able to read, write, and / or modify an ERD diagram, and translate it to a functional back end.

• Good communication skills.

Beneficial Abilities and Experience

• A solid understanding of agile processes.

• A strong sense of ownership, willing to flag issues even when it slows things down, because getting it right matters more than moving fast.

• A genuine team player who works well with engineers, production staff, office staff, and management. We’re a small company, you will be on a first name basis with everyone in the office.

• A pragmatic person with a solid grasp on why simple is always preferred over complex.

Qualifications

• A Degree in Software Development, IT / Systems, Computer Science, or other technical role; or, relevant experience. Code academy and self-taught software engineers are encouraged to apply also.

• 1–2 years of experience in software engineering, full stack engineering, front end engineering, software test automation, or similar role.

How Success Will Be Measured

• Your sprint commitment / feature-streams are delivered as communicated, with the appropriate level of quality, test coverage, and documentation.

• You support the team and company’s success by helping shape both the roadmap and the projects on the roadmap.

• You react with appropriate urgency to escalated user-facing issues, ideally able to detect them before they’re reported by end users, and deliver short, clear root cause and mitigation documentation.

Who This Role Is For

This role is for someone who wants to help shape a software team early on. You'll work closely with the engineers and production folks who build our products, and you'll actually have a say in the technical calls the team makes.

You ask for help when you need it, you help others when you can, and you're not afraid to question how something's done.

If you are confident you tick all the boxes, we’re happy to hear from you! But if you’re worried that you don’t have most of the required experience, education, or skills, but feel strongly that you want an opportunity to prove your potential and work somewhere that can help develop these capabilities, please do apply. We’re looking for both types of profiles, and those in between — and there's real room to grow with the team as it scales.
