Tanalink Hiring! Full Time Data Engineer in Federal Territory - Ricebowl

About the role

Tanalink builds IoT for tropical plantations. Our devices are carried by workers across Malaysia and stream telemetry over LoRaWAN into the platform that produces the coverage, productivity and yield numbers estate managers run their day on.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join the team behind that platform - working with our data science, infrastructure and dashboard engineers on everything from device data landing in the cloud, through ingestion and transformation, to the models behind every number a manager sees. You would be supporting a platform that is already live and growing, alongside people who know it well. If you like knowing how the whole system fits together, and being one of the people who fixes it when it doesn't, you will enjoy this.

Most people are surprised a palm oil company hires data engineers. The work is closer to IoT platform engineering than to agriculture - and an industry being instrumented for the first time throws up genuinely interesting data problems.

What you will do

Help build and operate the batch and streaming pipelines; work on the warehouse models from raw staging through to reporting; decode device telemetry as firmware and protocols change; support new estate onboarding; keep data quality honest and warehouse costs under control as the fleet grows.

What we need

- 5+ years in data engineering, owning production systems

- Strong SQL - window functions, incremental patterns, and a feel for query cost

- Strong Python - able to pick up a codebase you didn't write

- Solid data modelling and orchestration in production

- Comfortable working from documentation, and improving it as you go

Nice to have, not required

Our stack is GCP, BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, Beam/Dataflow and Terraform, with GitLab CI and Docker. Equivalents count - AWS or Azure, Snowflake or Databricks, Dagster or Prefect, Spark or Flink. You don't need plantation experience or Kubernetes; we will teach you the domain.
