Job Description
Responsibilities
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Technical Project Manager to coordinate delivery across a mixed team of engineers and other Project Managers working on on-premise Microsoft infrastructure projects for our clients. This is a coordination and delivery-tracking role rather than a line-management role: the postholder does not manage the performance of the engineers or PMs involved, does not provide technical sign-off or design oversight, and does not hold budget ownership. Line management, technical governance, and budget control for the team and its projects sit with other functions. The role exists to keep a multi-workstream programme moving: sequencing work across engineers and PMs, tracking progress and dependencies, surfacing risks and blockers, and keeping stakeholders informed — while relying on genuine technical familiarity with Microsoft infrastructure to ask the right questions and understand what the team is telling you.
Key Responsibilities
• Programme coordination: Sequence and coordinate work across a mixed team of engineers and
Project Managers assigned to the programme, ensuring dependencies between workstreams are
understood and managed.
• Delivery tracking: Track progress against plan across all workstreams: milestones, task status, and
dependencies, using the team's standard tooling.
• Project delivery: Run project deliverables through to closure (scope, plan, resourcing, RAID log,
client communications) for the workstreams directly assigned to this role.
• Scoping and estimation input: Translate customer requirements into project plans and
resource/effort estimates for on-premise infrastructure change (server refreshes, migrations,
upgrades, rebuilds, DR), for review and sign-off by technical and budget owners.
• Risk and issue escalation: Identify and surface project and programme-level risks and blockers
early, and escalate to the appropriate technical, budget, or line-management owner for resolution.
• Cross-functional coordination: Coordinate onboarding, offboarding, and interface with pre-sales,
service delivery, and support teams to ensure a smooth handover in both directions.
• Governance and reporting: Chair progress and status meetings, and produce status reporting
(RAG, milestones) for clients and internal stakeholders.
• Process ownership: Ensure projects follow agreed methodology (e.g. PRINCE2, Agile, or in-house
framework) and contribute to continuous improvement of PMO process, templates, and standards.
Technical Skills and Experience Required
• Strong working knowledge of core Microsoft infrastructure technologies, sufficient to understand
what engineers and other PMs are reporting and ask informed questions — not to provide technical sign-off. This should include most of:
• Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy
• Hyper-V and/or VMware virtualisation, including host clustering and platform-to-platform migrations
• System Center suite (SCVMM, SCCM/MECM) and Windows Server Failover Clustering
• On-premise storage technologies (Storage Spaces Direct, SAN/NAS) and on-premise backup and
DR platforms
• Networking fundamentals and virtualised networking (VLANs, NIC teaming, load balancing)
• Delivery experience: Track record of delivering infrastructure projects (migrations, server refreshes, datacentre moves, DR builds) from initiation through to closure.
• Methodology: Formal project management certification (PRINCE2 Practitioner, PMP, or equivalent) and familiarity with Agile/hybrid delivery approaches.
• MSP experience: Experience operating in an MSP or multi-client environment, managing competing priorities and client-specific governance requirements
• Stakeholder management: Confident communicating with senior stakeholders, both client-side and internal, including surfacing issues clearly and promptly.
• Technical literacy: Able to follow a technical discussion and ask the right questions, even outside
your own specialism, without needing to make the technical call yourself.
Desirable Skills & Experience
• Microsoft certifications (e.g. Windows Server Hybrid Administrator, MCSE-era Server/AD
credentials) or equivalent hands-on infrastructure background.
• Experience with PSA/PPM tooling (e.g Microsoft Project, Microsoft Planner) for portfolio and
resource management.
• Exposure to Citrix, NetScaler, or other application/desktop virtualisation projects.
