Job Purpose
The Automotive Air-Conditioning Technician - Aftersales & Technical Support provides hands-on diagnosis, repair, installation, and technical support for FHI's vehicle air-conditioning business. The role primarily supports buses, trucks, and other heavy or commercial vehicles, while helping FHI build the technical capability, service standards, and customer support needed to expand into passenger-car air-conditioning.
- Inspect and diagnose air-conditioning faults on buses, trucks, heavy vehicles, and, as the business develops, passenger cars
- Service, repair, install, and replace air-conditioning components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, blowers, expansion valves, hoses, fittings, controls, sensors, and related electrical parts.
- Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, vacuum testing, leak detection, charging, temperature checks, pressure checks, and system performance testing using approved equipment and procedures.
- Trace mechanical and electrical faults affecting cooling performance, airflow, controls, wiring, relays, switches, sensors, and auxiliary systems
- Determine whether a reported issue results from product failure, incorrect installation, refrigerant leakage, contamination, normal wear, vehicle condition, misuse, or another underlying cause.
- Support warranty and returned-part assessments by recording symptoms, readings, photographs, test evidence, rootcause findings, and recommended action
- Carry out final operating checks and road tests, where authorised and safe, to confirm cooling performance and repair quality before vehicle release
- Provide practical technical advice to fleet customers, workshops, dealers, sales personnel, and the aftersales team on product selection, application, fitment, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Assist FHI's passenger-car expansion by learning relevant systems, supporting trial jobs, documenting service methods, identifying tooling or training needs, and sharing field feedback.
- Support product demonstrations, installation guidance, technical briefings, and basic training for internal staff or business partners when required
- Maintain accurate job cards, inspection notes, refrigerant and parts usage, readings, photographs, warranty documents, and service records
- Maintain tools, recovery and charging equipment, diagnostic instruments, vehicles, and work areas in safe, clean, and serviceable condition
- Follow refrigerant-handling, environmental, road-safety, and occupational safety requirements at all times.
Requirements
- Certificate, diploma, or recognised vocational qualification in Automotive Air-Conditioning, Automotive Technology, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, or a related discipline.
- At least 2 years of hands-on automotive air-conditioning experience; experience with buses, trucks, commercial fleets, or heavy vehicles is strongly preferred.
- Sound knowledge of refrigeration principles, refrigerant circuits, pressure and temperature diagnosis, leak detection, and safe refrigerant handling
- Working knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, controls, wiring diagrams, diagnostic procedures, and air-conditioning component installation.
- Ability to use recovery and charging machines, vacuum pumps, manifold gauges, leak detectors, multimeters, diagnostic scanners, and common workshop tools safely and correctly.
- Able to document findings clearly and explain technical matters in practical language to non-technical colleagues and customers
- Basic computer skills for job records, email, photographs, reports, parts look-up, and warranty documentation
- Valid driving licence and willingness to conduct road tests or travel to customer/workshop locations when required. Physically able to perform normal workshop duties, including standing, bending, lifting parts or tools, and working around vehicles.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience repairing bus, truck, heavy-equipment, off-road, or other commercial-vehicle air-conditioning systems.
- Exposure to passenger-car air-conditioning systems and willingness to support FHI's entry into this market.
- Relevant refrigerant-handling certification or training, where applicable.
- Experience with automotive replacement parts, warranty assessment, fleet support, technical support, or field service.
- Strong fault-finding mindset with attention to detail and a methodical approach to root-cause analysis.
- Customer-focused, dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work independently as well as with sales and operations teams.
