The Sunrise Adult Training Centre is seeking an experienced and compassionate Lead Occupational Therapist to lead its Occupational Therapy team and provide direct clinical services to adults with disabilities.
The post holder will oversee the planning and delivery of person‑centred therapeutic programmes designed to promote independence, inclusion and quality of life. Responsibilities will include managing and mentoring the Occupational Therapy team, conducting client assessments, developing treatment plans, monitoring client progress, delivering training to stakeholders, and working closely with families, caregivers and multidisciplinary professionals.
The successful candidate must possess, at minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and have completed the relevant certification requirements to practise as a registered Occupational Therapist in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States or the Caribbean. The candidate must also be eligible for registration in the Cayman Islands through the Council for Professions Allied to Medicine.
Applicants should demonstrate a broad range of professional training, have at least three years’ experience working with adult learners with special needs, and possess a minimum of four years’ supervisory experience. A proven ability to build effective teams, mentor staff and support high levels of performance is essential.

JOB PURPOSE
- To lead and manage a therapeutic team providing Occupational Therapy services, to facilitate rehabilitative and recreational programmes, and oversee the implementation of individual programme goals for adult clients at the Sunrise Adult Training Centre (SATC).
- Additionally, this post is responsible for direct delivery of OT service to a caseload of adult clients at SATC.
DIMENSIONS
- The post holder works under the direction of the Director, Deputy Director, and Day Programme Coordinator. The post holder works collaboratively with all staff at SATC.
- Coordinates delivery of the Occupational Therapy Service at SATC for 70-90 adults with disabilities.
- Coordinate 1-3 training and in‑service workshops for SATC staff, caregivers and other stakeholders on an as‑needed basis.
- Completion of 70-90 client reports on an annual basis, as well as additional reports/communication as requested by other medical/allied‑health/insurance professionals working with clients.
- Deliver appropriate treatment services necessary to reach identified goals for approximately 70- 90 clients.
- Completes 1-3 special projects per annum, as identified in annual Performance Agreement, and by Sunrise Senior Management
- Represent and promote the Sunrise Adult Training Centre, and the inclusion of adults with disabilities in the Cayman Islands
Principal Accountabilities

Management of Services
- To work as a lead member within the Occupational Therapy team, whilst maintaining an active clinical caseload. The post-holder will ensure entire OT team, including themselves, does the following:
- Planning and delivering Occupational Therapy (OT) programmes to develop and promote the general independence and quality of life in adults with a wide range of disabilities and developmental delays, at the Sunrise Training Centre (SATC) and in community settings.
- Complete formal and informal OT assessments, involving clients, their families/carers, SATC staff and other relevant professionals as necessary, to determine SMART therapeutic goals for clients.
- Draft therapy plans, and implement appropriate individual and group‑based interventions, to facilitate clients’ achievement of their therapeutic goals .
- Evaluate clients' progress, and prepare professional reports and progress notes through timely and effective documentation.
- Recommend adaptive equipment and modifications to clients' work ing, training or living environments in order to facilitate client’s inclusion, safety, and attainment of OT goals .
- Advise on Health and Safety matters in the workplace, and maintain a safe and sanitized therapeutic working area.
- Participate in other special projects (e.g. research, contribution to specialist committees or councils) that require the expertise of the SATC OT, if requested.
Providing Support to Stakeholders:
- Communicate effectively with SATC staff, regarding integration of OT strategies into classroom environment, exercises, and any specialist equipment required to improve clients’ occupational performance.
- Communicate effectively with clients’ families/caregivers regarding home programmes for clients.
- Provide assistance needed for families/carers to navigate the health care & health insurance systems, when pursuing referrals for services not offered through SATC (e.g. Physiotherapy) and requisition of specialist adaptive equipment.
- Liaise with other agencies, including Department of Children and Family Services, Needs Assessment Unit, Cayman Islands Police Service, Health Services Authority, and private therapy services practitioners, as required.
Training:
- Train caregivers to safely and effectively carry out components of therapeutic programmes, and to provide for the needs of clients within the Sunrise Adult Training Centre.
- Conduct training and in‑service workshops for SATC staff, caregivers, and other stakeholders, as requested.
- Provide training and supervision for OT assistants as per regulatory board’s requirements.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field, and undertake relevant training to maintain professional licensure with one’s relevant OT association or governing body

MANAGEMENT OF STAFF
- Oversee and delivery of therapy services by SATC OT team to ensure ethical, conscious and competent service provision to clients and their families.
- Assist with the induction of new OT staff, and ongoing performance management, including providing feedback, mentoring and support, as necessary, to ensure that staff are working as effectively as possible
- Responsible for Performance Management of Occupational Therapy team.
- Train caregivers to safely and effectively carry out components of therapeutic programmes, and to provide for the needs of clients within the Sunrise Adult Training Centre.
- Conduct training and in‑service workshops for SATC staff, caregivers, and other stakeholders, as requested.
- Provide training and supervision for OT assistants as per regulatory board’s requirements.
- Keep abreast of new developments in the field, and undertake relevant training to maintain professional licensure with one’s relevant OT association or governing body

RECORDS
- Assist with preparing and maintaining client records, for the purpose of registering and onboarding clients, facilitation of “Team Around the Person” (TAP) Meetings, and monitoring and reviewing client progress
- Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual quantitative and qualitative reports, as requested by the Deputy Director and Director
- Maintain appropriate data collection to reflect contact and non‑contact time with clients.

- Assist with evaluation of the use of both material and human resources at the Centre in relation to the budgetary outputs
- Assist with ordering equipment and resources as needed.
- Actively participate in performance management and professional development activities, and where appropriate contribute to the development of strategies, practices, and procedures that improve the function and service delivery by SATC as a whole
- May be required to work outside normal working hours if the programme dictates (e.g. at a community inclusion event for clients)
- Carry out any other duties commensurate with the purpose and grading of the post that may, from time to time, be determined
- To involve oneself in SATC activities as relevant to clients’ needs, during the training day, including supervision time and community‑based outings & activities. Positive engagement with clients is expected at all times, and post‑holder must show initiative to offer assistance and engagement with clients and staff at all times
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Ministry is primarily concerned with the Education and Training outcomes desired by the Government, and delivers interventions to achieve these. The core Ministry team’s main responsibilities are: i) provision of policy advice to the Ministry and Cabinet and ii) accountability for the output and ownership performance of the Ministry, including its departments.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy
- Completion of the National Certification Board of Examinations to become a registered OT in Canada, UK, USA, or Caribbean. The successful candidate should meet eligibility requirements to be registered within the Cayman Islands, through the Council for Professions Allied to Medicine (CPAM).
- Demonstrable evidence of a wide range of professional training, and a minimum of 3 years’ experience working with adult learners with special needs
- Minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience, with demonstrated track record of building excellent teams and supporting exceptional performance.
- Strong record of achievement in providing clinical services to patients/ clients with significant learning, behavioural, physical and developmental challenges
- Demonstrable experience in the coordination and delivery of OT services for clients with SEN and disabilities
- Detailed, up‑to‑date understanding of issues relating to the needs of adults with SEN and disabilities
- Maintain a valid driver's license (Group 3) and access to a personal vehicle to allow travel required for service provision to clients in Centre, home and community as needed.
Preferred:
- Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy, or Doctor of Occupational Therapy (D.OT) would be preferred.
- Work experience in schools or training centresserving adults with disabilities for more than 3 years.
- Training in and possession of strong knowledge about sheltered/supportive workshops, health and wellness (many clients are aging and require appropriate proactive and reactive exercise and nutrition guidance), self‑regulation groups, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities, and prevocational skills assessment/training.
- Knowledge and experience with adaptive communication switches, lifts, wheelchairs and scooters utilized by persons with disabilities.
- Proficiency in Instructional Technology (I.T.) to be able to complete required documentation. The post holder should be able to use computer based software such as text‑reader software, text‑to‑speech software, and other augmentative communication devices etc. to facilitate communication with clients.
- Familiarity with monitoring fitting and maintenance of wheelchair equipment, other ambulatory aides, and orthoses, would be an asset.
- Familiarity with the ASDAN, City & Guilds, and other external qualification frameworks would be an asset
- Training in alternative communication systems, such as American Sign Language (ASL),
- adaptive communication devices, switches, boards, etc., would be an advantage
- First Aid/ CPR, C‑SMARRT, CPI, DIR‑Floortime, Intensive Interaction and other trainings related to working with Adults with Disabilities would be beneficial
- Valid Group 4 Driver’s License is an asset
Skills:
- A high standard of reading, speaking, writing and numeracy skills is essential
- Excellent verbal and written communication. Must demonstrate ability to communicate in a way which recognizes difference and ensures that people feel included and their individual communication needs are met
- Administrative skills that enable him/her to perform duties in developing a budget, completing annual department reports, drafting equipment orders, and developing trainings and workshops.

ASSIGNMENT AND PLANNING OF WORK
The Lead Occupational Therapist reports directly to the Day Programme Coordinator of the Sunrise Adult Training Centre, who will establish performance objectives and parameters for the post holder’s work, within the context of SATC’s outputs and strategic objectives. Close working relationships will need to be cultivated with all OT team‑members, SATC Programme Section Heads, Sunrise Senior Management, and Accounts & Office Manager to assist with planning and carrying out the Centre’s daily operations and special events (e.g. field trips, recreational outings, Family Fun Day, and annual concerts).
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS
- The post holder will directly line‑manage staff assigned to the Occupational Therapy team (3-5 staff members – Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants).
- The post holder will also Learning Support Assistants, Support Aides, and Student Interns as required.
OTHER WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The post holder must maintain and foster relationships with government departments, community agencies and organisations, and the business community to promote awareness and acceptance of the needs of adult Persons with Disabilities within the community. The post holder must also develop and maintain relationships with families and caregivers of clients, and colleagues at SATC.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY AND CONTROLS
The post holder assumes responsibility for management of all assigned cases and other duties under the supervision of the Day Programme Coordinator. The post holder makes routine decisions in line with the relevant policies and procedures operating within the Occupational Therapy Service, Day Programme, and SATC as a whole. Complex decisions will be referred to the SATC Day Programme Coordinator and SATC Senior Management as appropriate.
PROBLEMS/KEY FEATURES
The physical and emotional demands of this programme may be considerable from time to time. There are few local resources outside the Centre for clients to access. All staff must be self‑reliant, creative, and able to deal with emotional and physical stress. Special care must be taken to support and develop a positive working environment in order to retain staff. Due to limited geographic proximity to more traditional offerings, creative training and networking options are required to keep skills current.
In fulfillment of his/her duties the post holder will:

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Reasonably‑sized, multi‑use, working area related to delivery of occupational therapy‑focused activities.
- Standard office conditions apply. Sunrise is centrally located in George Town. The post‑holder must manage frequent interruptions, the need to assist with programme delivery, and their own workload. The post‑holder will need to flexibly work in a variety of settings, from shared office space to instructional areas to community settings and more. The workload can be demanding from time to time, and the post‑holder may be required to work beyond normal working hours as necessary to meet stringent deadlines.
