Manager / Principal, Motion Systems
Semiconductor Equipment R&D | Singapore
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Manager / Principal, Motion Systems to join an advanced semiconductor equipment R&D team in Singapore.
This role will take ownership of the design, development, and optimization of high-precision, high-speed motion systems for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing equipment. You will work closely with mechanical, software, controls, vision, and system engineering teams to deliver best-in-class performance in speed, positioning accuracy, repeatability, and system stability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize high-precision motion systems, including linear and rotary actuators, direct-drive motors, servo systems, high-resolution encoders, and feedback devices.
- Perform servo tuning and motion optimization to achieve high speed, accuracy, repeatability, and stability.
- Develop and optimize PID control, motion trajectories, and response profiles for complex multi-axis systems.
- Investigate and resolve vibration, resonance, structural dynamics, stiffness, and mechanical disturbance issues.
- Develop vibration isolation, damping, and noise suppression solutions to improve system performance.
- Conduct dynamic simulation, modal analysis, and system modelling to identify and mitigate motion-related limitations.
- Integrate motion systems with vision alignment systems, sensors, mechanical modules, and real-time control software.
- Support machine bring-up, calibration, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and continuous performance improvement.
- Develop motion tuning methodologies, validation procedures, and technical documentation for product scalability.
- Participate in DFMEA, reliability analysis, NPI validation, and productization of motion-critical subsystems.
- Evaluate motion components and work with suppliers on technical selection and cost-performance optimization.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
- At least 8–10 years of relevant experience in precision motion systems, preferably within semiconductor equipment, advanced automation, robotics, or other high-precision machinery.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of servo control, PID tuning, trajectory planning, and motion optimization.
- Solid understanding of system dynamics, structural stiffness, vibration, resonance, and motion stability.
- Experience with motion controllers such as ACS, Beckhoff, Omron Delta Tau, or equivalent platforms.
- Hands-on experience with servo motors, linear motors, encoders, laser interferometers, capacitive sensors, or other high-performance feedback systems.
- Experience in vibration modelling, modal testing, FEA, or dynamic simulation is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, Python, or similar modelling and diagnostic tools would be advantageous.
- Experience integrating motion, vision, sensors, and real-time control systems.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and system-level problem-solving skills.
- Experience with NPI, equipment validation, testing, and productization.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Good command of English and Mandarin for communication with regional stakeholders, customers, and suppliers.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for supplier engagement and new product transition activities.
Ideal Background
Candidates from semiconductor capital equipment, die bonding, advanced packaging, wafer handling, precision robotics, lithography, inspection/metrology, or high-end automation equipment environments would be particularly relevant.
