Responsibilities
My client is a leading global quantitative investment manager with a technology-led approach to financial markets. The firm brings together exceptional talent across software engineering, quantitative research, data science and trading, creating an environment where technology sits at the heart of the investment process.
Following significant international growth, the firm continues to invest heavily in its technology capabilities across APAC and is now looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join a new team in Hong Kong building a globally distributed, real-time data platform.
This is an opportunity to work on greenfield, high-performance distributed systems , solving complex engineering problems around scale, throughput and real-time data processing.
The Role
You will join a small, highly collaborative engineering team responsible for designing and building a new distributed platform from the ground up.
The platform will process and distribute large volumes of real-time data globally , supporting sophisticated research and data-driven decision-making.
Responsibilities will include:
- Designing and building high-throughput, distributed real-time systems
- Taking ownership of systems design and architecture , including scalability, reliability and performance
- Developing greenfield platforms capable of significant horizontal scaling
- Writing optimised, high-throughput production code
- Solving complex engineering challenges around real-time data distribution and processing
- Working closely with quantitative researchers, data scientists and other engineering teams
- Contributing to architectural decisions and the broader engineering culture of the team
- Helping shape technical standards and best practices as the platform and team grow
Requirements
The key requirement is a strong software engineering background combined with genuine experience designing and developing distributed real-time systems .
You should have:
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Hands-on experience developing distributed, real-time systems
- Strong knowledge of systems design and architecture
- A strong foundation in Python
- Experience writing performant, scalable and high-throughput software
- Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals
- Ability to reason about performance, scalability, reliability and architectural trade-offs
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- An interest in working within a highly technical, engineering-led environment
The team is relatively technology agnostic and is interested in strong engineers rather than candidates from one particular technology stack.
Experience within financial markets is not required . Candidates from technology companies, data infrastructure, cloud platforms, distributed systems, real-time applications and other technically demanding engineering environments are strongly encouraged to apply.
Advantageous Experience
Any of the following would be beneficial but are not essential:
- Kubernetes and cloud-native architecture
- Kafka or other real-time streaming technologies
- High-performance Python, including NumPy or Numba
- Python interoperability with C++ or Rust
- C++ or Rust
- Polars, Arrow, Flight or gRPC
- Large-scale data platforms
- Market or financial data
- SRE / DevOps
- Technical or project leadership
