Job Description

Responsibilities

We’re CyberOwl

Senior Software Development Engineer In Test:

CyberOwl is a fast-growing maritime cybersecurity company helping shipowners and critical infrastructure operators gain visibility, security, and compliance across their remote and distributed assets. Our technology provides near real-time insight into onboard IT and OT environments, helping customers identify cyber threats, monitor compliance, and strengthen operational resilience. We complement this with managed security and specialist cybersecurity advisory services.

Today, we're a team of 70+ Owls across the UK, Greece, Singapore, Malaysia, Poland, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. We move quickly, think creatively, and are recognised as innovators in our market. We challenge each other, support each other's growth, and celebrate success together. With more than 13 nationalities, 20+ languages, and a shared ambition to shape the future of maritime cybersecurity, our culture is one of our greatest strengths.

We're deeply values driven. Our values guide how we work with customers, collaborate with colleagues, make decisions, and hold ourselves accountable.

Location:

Initially hybrid, moving to remote.

Our Product & Service:

Our proprietary product, Medulla, is a distributed event driven maritime cybersecurity system with devices and vessels at the edge, Kafka event chains, service contracts and a data heavy UI. A single device event crosses several services before customers see data on a dashboard. Medulla is supported with our in house SOC capability.

The Role:

Due to our continued growth, we're now looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test. You'll be the technical backbone of our QA, own test automation, raise the quality bar and help the existing team reach new quality standards.

You'll inherit an existing framework to build on, and strategic direction so you can focus on the "how". Inline with our ethos, you'll have autonomy to help you achieve the expected outcomes.

As a senior member of the team we'll expect you to coach your colleagues to be more automation fluid and you'll also be hands on.

What You Can Expect:

  • A UI suite in migration. The product UI is being rewritten, and the test suite will move with it.
  • The backend coverage being built out with room to shape testing.
  • Vessel side automation as greenfield allowing you to extend testing.
  • An existing baseline framework for you to enhance and mature.
  • Ownership of automation architecture and frameworks, backend testing and UI automation.
  • Deep involvement in coaching and upskilling the QA team.
  • Deputising for the QA Technical Lead / Head of QA

What You need to Succeed:

  • The ability to work with ambiguity
  • A clear systems thinking approach. You can see the pipeline behind the test, device detection, Kafka, metric capture, the dashboard and you can predict what might break upstream when a service changes.
  • Risk first prioritisation. You automate the highest risk highest frequency work first.
  • Curiosity to go and understand the system, build your own model of data flows and where it breaks before writing test code.
  • Knowing which best practices to adopt.
  • Teaching by doing, demonstrate to engineers what works and why.
  • Knowing how to build strong relationships with developers.
  • Clear communication and knowing how to tailor your communications to international audiences.
  • Very strong emotional intelligence and knowing how to influence without authority.

The Important Technical Skills:

  • Senior level proficiency in Python and a disposition to write clean, maintainable code.
  • Prior framework ownership. Whether you have built or substantially extended one.
  • Strong testing fundamentals, design, partitioning, boundary analysis etc.
  • CI/CD fluency including owning pipeline test stages.
  • Experience of data and event driven testing.
  • Service virtualisation, identifying test doubles, mocks, stubs and fakes
  • Experience of cross layer debugging and RCA
  • UI Automation at scale
  • Disciplined yet impactful use of AI tools as a multiplier.
  • Proven people leadership, including coaching, deescalation and performance development.

What We Value:

At CyberOwl we live by our values of Bold, Empathy, Ownership, Why, Learn and Spirited. You’ll need to demonstrate how you fit those values and apply them to this role.

Why Join Us?

You'll join a business with the agility, pace, and entrepreneurial spirit of a high growth technology company, combined with the backing and global reach of DNV, one of the most respected names in the maritime industry. This combination provides a unique platform to build, innovate, and scale.

You'll have genuine ownership and influence. This is a leadership role where your ideas will shape strategy, your decisions will have a visible impact, and your success will directly contribute to the company's growth. We value people who challenge convention, think independently, and are motivated by outcomes rather than hierarchy.

Most importantly, you'll be joining a values driven team with an exceptional culture. We are ambitious, collaborative, accountable, and committed to helping each other succeed. As we continue to grow globally, we remain focused on building a company where talented people can do their best work, develop professionally, and make a meaningful impact.
