Role Description The Senior Plug & Abandonment (P&A) Engineer is a contract, on-site role based in Kuala Lumpur City. This role is responsible for planning, designing, and supervising well plug and abandonment operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company procedures. Day-to-day tasks include preparing P&A programs, conducting technical evaluations, coordinating with drilling, subsea, marine, and HSE teams, and overseeing execution to ensure safe and cost-effective operations. The Senior P&A Engineer will review well data, perform risk assessments, recommend appropriate materials and tools, and manage contractors and service providers involved in P&A activities. The role also involves monitoring operational performance, preparing technical reports, supporting audits, and contributing to continuous improvement of P&A methodologies and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
A. Engineering & Project Leadership
- Lead the planning and engineering design of Plug & Abandonment programmes in accordance with regulatory requirements, client specifications, and company standards.
- Review well history, integrity data, risk assessments, and operational constraints to develop technically sound abandonment solutions.
- Prepare and approve engineering calculations, well barrier designs, cementing programmes, and abandonment procedures.
- Provide technical leadership throughout project planning, execution, and close-out.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise project risks.
B. Project Execution
- Oversee the execution of Plug & Abandonment operations to ensure compliance with approved programmes, HSE requirements, and operational objectives.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and service providers throughout project execution.
- Monitor project schedule, budget, operational performance, and resource utilisation.
- Provide technical guidance and resolve complex engineering or operational issues during field activities.
- Review daily operational reports, lessons learned, and final project documentation.
C. Well Integrity & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure permanent well barriers are designed, installed, and verified in accordance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
- Verify compliance with company procedures, client requirements, and regulatory obligations.
- Support well integrity assessments and technical assurance activities.
- Review and approve engineering documentation, abandonment reports, and regulatory submissions.
D. HSE & Continuous Improvement
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with HSE management systems.
- Lead HAZID, HAZOP, risk assessments, Management of Change (MOC), and technical reviews.
- Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers through coaching, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering practices, operational performance, and project delivery.
Authorities
- Approve Plug & Abandonment engineering recommendations within delegated authority.
- Recommend suspension of operations where personnel safety, environmental protection, or well integrity is at risk.
- Direct technical activities involving engineers, contractors, and service providers during project execution.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, abandonment programmes, and technical documentation within delegated authority.
- Escalate significant technical, operational, commercial, or HSE risks to the Plug & Abandonment Superintendent or Well Integrated Services Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Well Engineering, Drilling, Well Intervention, or Plug & Abandonment operations within the Oil & Gas industry.
- Minimum 5 years of experience leading Plug & Abandonment projects.
- Proven experience managing complex offshore and/or onshore well abandonment operations.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, and service providers.
· Strong knowledge of well integrity management, abandonment regulations, and industry best practices.
Languages: Good command of English, both written and spoken.
