Job Description

Responsibilities

Materials Engineer

Job description

Improve polymer and elastomer formulations, processing performance and manufacturing yield through hands-on materials research, testing and controlled production trials. Translate application requirements into validated formulations, reliable material specifications, repeatable processes and documented manufacturing methods.

Work closely with in-house engineering and manufacturing teams, material suppliers and testing laboratories. Lead materials investigations, implement practical improvements and supervise technicians carrying out material preparation, testing and process trials.

Detailed job scope

Materials research and formulation improvement

· Translate application needs into material requirements, including dimensional stability, mechanical performance, operating temperature, chemical exposure, wear and electrical properties where relevant.

· Evaluate polymer and elastomer grades, material suppliers and available technical data; identify candidates for material qualification and molding trials.

· Investigate how composition, additives, fillers, moisture, thermal history and processing conditions affect performance and manufacturability.

· Lead improvements to existing formulations and develop trial variants against defined performance, processing and yield objectives, working with suppliers or laboratories where required.

· Plan controlled formulation trials, document composition and preparation changes, and compare results with the current formulation before recommending implementation.

· Maintain formulation revisions, batch traceability and validated processing instructions; confirm improvements preserve required product properties and customer specifications.

· Identify application-specific cleanliness, outgassing or contamination requirements with engineering and customers when relevant to semiconductor use; do not assume every part has the same exposure conditions.

Materials testing and qualification

· Define test plans, acceptance criteria, sample preparation and conditioning, and the number of samples or repeats needed to support a decision.

· Perform or coordinate appropriate physical and mechanical testing, including strength, elongation, hardness, dimensional stability, chemical resistance and aging; include compression-set evaluation for elastomers where relevant.

· Select suitable thermal and rheological characterisation methods, such as DSC, TGA, DMA or flow/cure testing, and interpret results in relation to processing and end-use performance. Use external laboratories where equipment or specialist competence is unavailable.

· Investigate failures and variation through structured experiments and root-cause analysis; distinguish material effects from processing, finishing and measurement effects.

· Maintain traceable material and sample records, test reports, comparison data and technical recommendations. Validate selected combinations of material, process and application rather than relying solely on supplier datasheets.

Processing optimisation and yield improvement

· Provide material-selection and processing guidance for assigned polymer/elastomer molding projects, working with the relevant tooling and process engineers.

· Evaluate flow, shrinkage, cure or thermal behaviour and other material characteristics relevant to the selected molding process.

· Optimise material preparation, conditioning and processing conditions through coordinated trials; establish repeatable operating ranges and technician instructions for approved formulations.

· Investigate material-related molding defects and batch variation; support qualification of supplier or material changes through documented testing.

· Lead investigations into material- and processing-related scrap/rework, verify corrective actions over repeat batches or runs, and quantify their contribution to yield improvement with manufacturing and quality.

· Maintain clear handoffs: this role leads materials evidence and recommendations; the tooling engineer leads mold design and tool changes.

Technical capability and technician supervision

· Establish practical material handling, sample preparation, testing, batch recording and equipment-care procedures for the selected processes.

· Identify facilities, equipment, test capability, training and supplier support needed to execute the agreed development programme.

· Plan and prioritise technician work, demonstrate methods, review data quality and coach troubleshooting skills.

· Coordinate process-specific safe working arrangements with equipment suppliers and the company's safety owner, including material handling and post-processing controls.

· Prepare concise project reports, recommendations, material specifications and manufacturing handover documentation.

3D printing experience and supporting scope

· Apply practical polymer/plastic 3D-printing experience to material selection, conditioning, process trials and evaluation of printed-part performance.

· Work with engineering to define suitable precision-part applications and required tolerances, surface finishes and material properties; assess and recommend appropriate printing technologies, materials and equipment.

· Support polymer build preparation, parameter optimisation and post-processing trials; evaluate dimensional accuracy, defects, material properties and repeatability before recommending a material/process combination for use.

· Coordinate metal-printing feasibility studies and sample evaluations with specialists or suppliers, drawing on their metallurgy and process expertise.

· Document findings, limitations and suitable operating practices, and train technicians on the selected methods.

Experience required: Practical experience applying polymer/plastic 3D printing in engineering or manufacturing, including material/process selection, trials or part evaluation. Specialist metal-printing expertise is not required.

This is a supporting responsibility within the Materials Engineer role. Printing equipment/processes, target parts, tolerances and finishes are undecided; scope and investment recommendations will follow application assessment. The printing workstream is distinct from rubber mold tooling production and will be scheduled around the primary formulation, processing and yield objectives.

Job requirementsEssential

· Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Candidates with another technical qualification and strong demonstrated relevant industrial capability may be considered.

· Typically four to six or more years of relevant industrial materials/process development experience, with evidence of independently delivering projects from investigation and trials into practical manufacturing use. This is a target experience range, not an upper limit.

· Strong polymer science and engineering-plastics knowledge, with practical elastomer characterisation or processing experience relevant to the assigned molding work.

· Demonstrated hands-on formulation improvement and process optimisation, with evidence of reducing material-related defects, scrap or rework while maintaining required part properties.

· Ability to design experiments, analyse test results and connect material behaviour to processing conditions and part performance.

· Practical knowledge of dimensional inspection, engineering drawings, tolerances and manufacturing handover.

· Demonstrated ability to coordinate technical suppliers or laboratories and supervise or train technicians.

Preferred

· Experience establishing a materials laboratory, new material processing method or material qualification system.

· Work on high precision components for semiconductor manufacturing or other demanding industrial applications.

· Experience with engineering/high-performance polymers and translating material development into molding production.

· Master's degree in a relevant materials discipline where supported by substantial practical work. A PhD is not required for this proposed role.

Priorities for the first six months

The primary outcomes are improved material formulations, improved processing and higher manufacturing yield.

· Establish a baseline for selected materials and processes, identify the principal material/process causes of defects and yield loss, and agree the improvement projects with engineering and manufacturing.

· Develop and validate formulation and processing improvements through controlled comparisons and repeat batches or runs, demonstrating improved yield while maintaining required dimensional, functional and material properties.

· Transfer validated improvements into controlled formulation records, processing instructions, inspection/test criteria and technician training; verify that results are sustained in routine use.
