Role Description

Assesses how climate-related changes could affect an organization’s strategy, assets, operations, finances, and stakeholders. Works with risk, sustainability, finance, operations, engineering, and business teams to identify potential exposures and develop practical ways to manage them. The role may focus on physical risks, transition risks, or both.

A Climate Risk Analyst gathers climate, location, asset, financial, and operational data; applies analytical methods; and prepares risk assessments, maps, models, and reports. A Climate Risk Consultant advises organizations or clients on assessment methods, scenario analysis, resilience planning, risk controls, and reporting. A Climate Risk Manager leads the climate risk program, sets priorities and governance, coordinates teams and resources, and reports material risks and progress to senior leaders.

Evaluates physical risks such as heat, flooding, storms, drought, wildfire, and other hazards that could affect facilities, suppliers, infrastructure, employees, or customers. Assesses transition risks related to changes in policy, technology, markets, financing, customer expectations, and business practices as economies respond to climate change. Uses scenarios and time horizons to examine possible effects on operations, asset values, supply chains, costs, revenue, and strategic plans.

Works with internal stakeholders and external specialists to assess data quality, assumptions, exposure, vulnerability, and potential financial impacts. Helps identify adaptation and resilience measures, risk controls, investment needs, and contingency plans. Prepares management reports, risk registers, scenario analyses, and supporting information for sustainability or financial disclosures, as appropriate. Tracks actions and changes in risk over time and explains the uncertainties and limitations of the analysis.

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, climate science, engineering, economics, finance, risk management, geography, or a related field; advanced study is an asset
  • Experience in climate risk, enterprise risk management, sustainability, environmental analysis, insurance, infrastructure, or consulting
  • Understanding of physical and transition climate risks and how they may affect business activities
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work with climate, asset, geographic, financial, and operational data

  • Ability to assess data quality, assumptions, uncertainty, and limitations
  • Clear writing and presentation skills for explaining technical findings to business leaders and other stakeholders
  • Strong project-management and collaboration skills for coordinating cross-functional assessments
  • Ability to translate analysis into practical risk controls, adaptation measures, or resilience plans
  • Knowledge of enterprise risk management, internal controls, or sustainability reporting is an asset
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and analytical tools; GIS, statistical software, or climate risk platforms are beneficial
  • Good judgment and attention to detail when preparing risk assessments and reporting information
  • Relevant qualifications in climate risk, sustainability, finance, engineering, or enterprise risk management are beneficial
  • Team leadership, program governance, budget oversight, and experience reporting to senior management may be expected for manager-level positions
