Role Description

Helps the organization understand and manage its cloud spending while ensuring that cloud resources are used efficiently and provide appropriate business value. Works with finance, engineering, product, procurement, and cloud operations teams to connect usage with applications, services, and business units. Analyzes billing and consumption data, explains cost trends, investigates unexpected changes, and identifies opportunities to reduce waste or improve resource utilization.

A Cloud Cost Analyst focuses on billing, usage, budgets, forecasts, and cost allocation. Prepares reports and dashboards that show how cloud costs are distributed and changing over time. A FinOps Analyst combines financial and cloud data to help teams plan spending, evaluate options, and track savings. A FinOps Engineer builds automation and technical controls that integrate cost management into cloud operations and software delivery.

Reviews cloud resource configurations and usage to identify idle, underused, or oversized services. Assesses options such as adjusting compute capacity, scheduling non-production environments, optimizing storage and data transfer, selecting more suitable services, and evaluating commitment or discount plans. Partners with technical teams to ensure proposed changes meet requirements for performance, reliability, security, and availability.

Develops or improves cost allocation, tagging, budgeting, alerting, forecasting, and showback or chargeback practices. Helps teams make cloud costs visible during planning and development, and supports cost reviews for products and workloads. Tracks optimization actions and validates outcomes after implementation, checks for unintended effects, and documents expected and realized savings. May also contribute to FinOps training, policy development, cloud governance, and continuous improvement.
