For some, lifestyle photography might not be a very clear-cut branch of photography. At ZINQ, we consider lifestyle photography to be an intricate balance between documentary-style photography and portrait photography. There is an element of spontaneity to the shots and, to a certain extent, they are also constructed in a controlled environment. Lifestyle photography candidly depicts a subject in a particular scenario within their natural environment. In terms of directing as photographers, we often steer a scene towards a client’s desired outcome by merely giving prompts to the subject and allowing the moment to unfold organically. There is minimal interference in terms of structuring minutiae details. We then have to capture these golden nuggets with instinct and precise timing. It is tougher to shoot compared to other forms of photography as we are constructing spontaneity—as paradoxical as that may sound.
