Let's say you just went through your first job interview with a specific company, and you thought it went well. And it did, the company believes that you are qualified for the job, but there's one more thing you have to go through—the second round interview. 

Hold up, second round interview? What else are they going to ask? Well, here are some differences between the first round and the second round interviews.

There are some things you should keep in mind. These differences can be different, and they depend on the company, the job, and the interviewer. Usually, the company may decide to push the second interview in a direction centered on their own interest.

The second interview could also be less structured, and interviews can be addressed on a case by case basis. In any case, this article is a guideline to help you prepare for second round interviews.

Expect the second interview to be longer.

The interviewer's rank and position

There are significant differences in the rank or position of the interviewer. You could find a senior manager to conduct the first interview, but in the second interview, you will find that a more senior employee or director generally conducts these interviews.

Of course, this depends on the particular company and simply provides you a hint of the more distinct differences between the two. Other noticeable differences are the length of the interviews and the questions asked. Another distinct difference is that the second interview concentrates more on your education and experience, while the first is focuses on your skills.

The questions are different too

In the first interview, there's a high chance you will be asked more analytical questions. The second round is more about open-ended questions.

Second round interview questions could also be more strategically based, but again, it is essential to remember this can vary from company to company and are influenced by the interviewer. 

How long will it take?

You should always assume the second interview will take longer than the first. Since the first interview is viewed as a screening process, you can expect that the second interview will concentrate on the more complicated and detailed information.

How long will it be? The second round interview could take a few hours, so you should keep your schedule clear for the rest of the day because you'll need to focus on the interview without stress or time restraints. 

Don't worry, you'll still get to ask questions. Just be more specific.

Questions and answers 

Just like the first interview, the second interview will involve more dialogue. However, the interviewers are not the only ones who'll ask the questions; you will also get to address your own questions.

The interviewer will address you directly, and they will ask you questions that can range from elaborating on information on your resume to behavioural questions.

So, if the interviewer says that you will have a second interview, be very prepared—more than how you would prepare for your first interview.
