Role Description

The Design Engineer II is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing automation systems that integrate vision inspection and defect rejection in manufacturing environments. This role requires hands-on experience in industrial automation, mechanical and electrical design, and system integration. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in automation engineering, with experience beyond an entry-level role but not yet at a senior leadership level.

 

Job Descriptions / Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain mechanical automation systems and infrastructure to support vision inspection systems and automated manufacturing defect rejection processes.
  • Develop and implement innovative mechanical automation solutions based on project requirements, production needs, and system constraints.
  • Conduct technical performance benchmarking, testing, and analysis to evaluate design performance and support engineering decisions.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and mechanical drawings for project proposals, system development, and implementation.
  • Evaluate the feasibility, functionality, and manufacturability of proposed mechanical designs, including identifying potential design improvements and risks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software, vision, electrical, and production teams, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and automation systems.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and product demonstrations of automation systems at customer or production sites.
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback to ensure designs meet technical, safety, quality, and project requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation for hardware and mechanical designs, including schematics, engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure mechanical drawings, schematics, and documentation accurately reflect the final deployed machinery and maintain proper revision control.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and automation-related issues during development, installation, and deployment, and recommend effective corrective actions.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, manufacturability, and overall automation performance.
  • Assist with ad hoc tasks and assignments related to mechanical design, engineering, or technical operations as required by management to support overall business and project objectives.


Skills & Experience

  • Familiarity with a wide range of industrial PLCs, PCs, and HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Proficiency in creating mechanical designs and simulations using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar software.
  • Experience working with external suppliers/System Integrators for order placements, design, and installation of automation systems.
  • Experience in the installation and troubleshooting of mechanical systems, including conveyors, robotic arms, industrial sensors, cameras, and industrial PLCs/PCs.
  • 2 to 4 years of automation experience.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with robotic arms, industrial sensors, and vision systems integration.
  • Knowledge of machine vision technology and image processing techniques.
  • Familiarity with programming industrial PLCs and configuring HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
  • Understanding of safety standards and regulations in industrial automation.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or similar programming languages for automation-related tasks.
  • Certifications in automation systems, robotics, or related fields are an added advantage.
  • Familiar with industry standards such as ISO 13849, CE marking, or OSHA compliance.
