Role Summary
The Senior Wireman is the certified electrical authority and the team leader on every Social Empresa installation site. You own the electrical side of the job end to end — AC and DC wiring, protection, earthing, testing and commissioning — while leading a team of installers to complete safe, high-quality solar PV installations on time.
This is a working leadership role: you are on the roof and at the DB with your team, not managing from a distance. You set the standard on site, sign off the electrical work under your PW4 competency, communicate professionally with the customer, and develop your installers — many of whom are Orang Asli youth and young people from low-income households — into skilled, reliable tradespeople.
Why this role matters now: Social Empresa’s core goal is to build and operate 20 installation teams delivering high-quality installations daily by 31 December 2026 (2026 plan: 14 new wiremen and 70 installers). “Wireman availability” is reviewed every month because certified wiremen who can also lead a team are the constraint on how many teams we can field. The Senior Wireman is the role that makes each new team possible.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Electrical Installation & Wiring (AC and DC)
- Plan and carry out the electrical works for residential and small commercial rooftop solar PV systems: DC string wiring, MC4 terminations, combiner/DC isolators, inverter connection, AC cabling, and integration into the customer’s distribution board (DB).
- Route, secure and label cables neatly and correctly (trunking, conduit, cable trays, UV-rated materials) so the installation is safe, serviceable and looks professional.
- Install and size protection devices (MCBs, RCDs, SPDs, isolators) and earthing systems according to the approved design and single-line diagram (SLD).
- Handle single-phase and three-phase connections confidently; identify and fix existing wiring issues at the customer’s premises before connecting the PV system, and escalate unsafe existing installations.
- Install supporting products where required — battery systems, microinverters, monitoring devices and EV chargers (ChargeSingh) — under the guidance of the Technical team.
2. Team Leadership & Site Supervision
- Lead your installation team on site: brief the job each morning, assign tasks, set the pace and make sure everyone knows the plan, the risks and their role.
- Supervise installers’ work (mounting, panel placement, cable runs) and personally check quality before the team leaves the roof.
- Manage the team’s working day to hit the daily schedule — start on time, minimise idle time, and complete the job in one visit wherever possible.
- Keep discipline: attendance, punctuality, conduct, PPE and respect for the customer. Address issues on the spot and escalate repeated issues to your reporting manager.
- Act as the single point of contact for your team on site for the Operations, Technical and Logistics teams.
3. Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Work in full compliance with the Electricity Supply Act 1990, Electricity Regulations 1994, Suruhanjaya Tenaga requirements, OSHA 1994, relevant Malaysian Standards (e.g. MS IEC 60364, MS 1837 for grid-connected PV) and TNB / NEM requirements.
- Carry out a site risk assessment before work starts: roof condition, access, working-at-height setup, weather and existing electrical hazards.
- Enforce isolation, lock-out/tag-out and safe-work practices for all electrical work. No live working.
- Ensure 100% PPE and fall-protection use by every team member, every day. Stop work immediately if conditions are unsafe.
- Report all incidents, near-misses and unsafe conditions on the same day.
4. Testing, Commissioning & Handover
- Test every system before energising: polarity, open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc), insulation resistance, earth resistance and RCD operation.
- Commission the inverter, confirm system output, and set up the customer’s monitoring app.
- Complete the testing and commissioning report, site photos and checklist for every job, and submit them the same day.
- Support the NEM / TNB meter-change process with correct documentation and site readiness.
- Walk the customer through the system at handover: how it works, isolation points, monitoring app and who to call.
5. Customer Communication on Site
- Represent SOLS professionally from arrival to departure — you are often the only SOLS person the customer meets in person.
- Follow the installer communication template (mandatory and optional talking points) at arrival, during the job and at handover.
- Explain any site changes (panel layout, cable route, DB upgrade) clearly to the customer and get agreement before proceeding; inform Operations immediately.
- Leave the site clean and the customer’s property as you found it. Protect roofs, ceilings and walls.
- Make sure the customer completes the installation feedback form before the team leaves.
6. Training & Developing Installers
- Train and coach new installers and apprentices (including Solar Academy trainees) on safe installation methods, tools, wiring standards and site behaviour.
- Teach by doing: show, let them try, check, correct — then let them own the task.
- Give regular, honest feedback on each team member’s skills, attitude and reliability to your reporting manager.
- Identify installers with potential to become wiremen and support them on the path to Suruhanjaya Tenaga certification.
- Share learnings, mistakes and better methods with other teams so the standard rises across all installation teams.
7. Materials, Tools & Vehicle
- Check the job’s bill of materials against stock before leaving the warehouse; flag shortages early so jobs are not delayed or cancelled.
- Use materials efficiently and return unused stock correctly. No wastage, no unrecorded usage.
- Keep the team’s tools and test equipment (insulation tester, multimeter, clamp meter, earth tester) complete, calibrated and in good condition.
- Take responsibility for the assigned team vehicle: proper use, cleanliness and timely reporting of damage or servicing needs under the vehicle management system.
8. Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Attend the morning meet-up and give clear daily updates on job status, completions, issues and next-day readiness (WhatsApp group / tracker).
- Log defects, rework and recurring site problems by root cause, not just the symptom.
- Suggest simpler, faster and safer ways of working using Delete. Simplify. Accelerate. Automate. (DSAA).
- Support partial installations where stock is delayed, so customers and revenue are not held back unnecessarily.
- Other relevant duties assigned by your reporting manager or the Management from time to time.
