Are you looking for a new job? Maybe you're looking to start a new career? Before you send in your resignation letter, there are a few things you must know. DO NOT make these mistakes when you're changing jobs!

1. You hate your job so much you're rushing to find a new one

We understand that feeling when you found yourself in the wrong position or company, and you ended up hating every second of the day spent at the workplace. You're trying to find a job, any job just so you can get out of there fast.

But here's the problem: when you're rushing to find a new job, you might make the same mistakes twice and find yourself in the same environment that you hate.

What you should do: Be patient, go through the job applications carefully to make sure you're choosing the right job this time around.

Don't rush to find a new job, no matter how miserable your current situation is.

2. You're only changing your job because someone's pressuring you to do so

Maybe your parents want you to get a 'better' job. It's nice that they care about you, but switching jobs in one thing, changing careers is a life-altering decision.

If you're doing this for someone else and not your own happiness, you'll end up being miserable.

What you should do: Remember that you're the one in control, it's okay to consult with friends and family to help you make your decision. But do not make significant decisions just because you want to please someone else other than yourself. Trust what you know about yourself and do your own research into career possibilities.

3. You're applying for jobs with the same old resume

If your resume simply lists your past experience, it will be hard for you to jump into a new field or career role because hiring managers will focus too much on the jobs themselves and not the skills you've gained.

What you should do: If you're thinking of switching careers, highlight your transferable skills and relevant training, experience and education. Build your resume to focus more on your skills than your past jobs. Even better, tailor your resume for the job you're applying for. For example, if you're applying for a Social Media Manager role, highlight the skills and expertise related to the job.

Don't apply for jobs without doing any research first.

4. You think that the only reason to change jobs is to make more money

You can ignore this part if your passion in life is to make money. Some people prefer cash and others prefer happiness. If you want happiness, don't choose a job just because it pays a lot.

Sure, money can make you happier, but is it really worth it if you end up being depressed at the workplace every day? You are spending at least 5 days working, so you need to have that commitment. If money motivates you, then more power to you. But if not? Think twice before changing jobs.

What you should do: You need to find a career that makes you feel passionate about your job. When you are passionate about your job, hours pass by like minutes. You don't feel burdened when new tasks come up; instead, you see it as a challenge that you can't wait to solve.

5. You don't care to research the job you're applying for

Do not apply for jobs blindly because it can hurt you in the long run. You will waste time looking for jobs that are not right for you. You will also miss out on opportunities that might have been great in your career.

What you should do: Always take the time to evaluate yourself and research the job that you want. Before you can find your dream job, you need to ask yourself these questions:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • What makes you happy at work?
  • What are your long-term career goals?
  • What skills do you bring to the table?
  • Which job skills you need to learn to change your job?

Knowing yourself and the ins and outs of the job you want are crucial for a successful career change.

Take the time to consider everything before you take the giant step to a new career.

Remember, you have what it takes. Your experience, your current skills, and your age, none of those matters. You need to believe in yourself and your ability to dedicate yourself to professional success. Avoid these mistakes, and you will find the career you want.
