What Do These Interview Questions Really Mean?

Are you worried that you might get a typical job interview question wrong?

Technically, there are no real right or wrong answers to job interview questions, except for scenarios where a job candidate lies or badmouths their former employer. What's truly important is that you need to understand what employers are actually asking for with these interview questions.

Basically, if you understand what they are asking for, the better you will perform in the job interview. Thus, the closer will get to becoming the perfect candidate for the job.

1. Tell us about yourself.

Well, you might be tempted to tell about your whole life story, including your hobbies, but what they are asking for is a short introduction of:

  • Who you are
  • What you can offer for the company
  • Why you are the right person for the job

So, now you can rehearse your answer ahead of the interview and not stumble upon words or have an identity crisis when they ask you this question.

2. Why should we hire you?

Another typical question. What the employer really wants to know is the reasons they should choose you instead of other candidates. This is the part where you describe your accomplishments, qualifications and explain how you can fit right in with the organisation.

How do you know you're the right fit with the organisation? Well, you will need to research the company first and understand its mission, vision, and values and compare it with your own principles. Only then you can explain how you fit perfectly with the organisation.

3. What's your biggest weakness?

Are you continually trying to improve yourself? We should all strive to improve each aspect of ourselves. But in this case, it should be something related to your professional self. You should discuss a real flaw that you have or had, and what you are doing or have done to erase said flaw.

So, do not give a typical answer such as "I'm too detail-oriented" or "I'm a perfectionist to a fault."

4. Where do you see yourself in a few years?

For this question, the interviewer wants to know if you have set goals for yourself, specifically in the near future. You want to show enough ambition, but not too much. Otherwise, the interview will be worried that you will never be satisfied with the job you're applying for.

Just in case, please don't say you're planning to leave the organisation in five years. Being honest does not mean disclosing unnecessary information.

5. Are you a team player?

Ah, yes, an introvert's worst nightmare. But even if you're an introvert, don't worry too much about it. What the employer wants to know is if you can get along with their employees. They also want to see if you can succeed in a team setting.

You can answer this question by giving specific examples of excellent team experience. You can provide details of your team's accomplishments and your role within the group.

Depending on the position you're applying for, being a team player does not mean you have to work with each 24/7. It just means that you can communicate effectively with other members and stay productive.

For example, if you're applying for a job as a software developer, you'll need to show that you can clearly and consistently communicate highly technical information to other team members since not everyone understands programming jargons.

That's all for now. Don't worry, we'll come up with even more ways to answer interview questions the right way. If you're looking for a job, Ricebowl has so many job openings for you!
