ASEM (Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia) is a national initiative launched in November 2023 under the Malaysia IC Design Park, aligned with the National Semiconductor Strategy and led by the Ministry of Economy with strong support from the Selangor State Government and SIDEC. It aims to elevate Malaysia’s semiconductor industry from “Made in Malaysia” to “Made by Malaysia” by promoting local product design, prototyping, and production. ASEM provides industry stakeholders with access to advanced tools and resources, including EDA tools, testing infrastructure, IP resources, MPW services, talent development programs, and the Selangor Semiconductor Fund. Through strategic partnerships with leading international institutions and extensive collaboration with local universities, industry partners, and major foundries, ASEM supports advanced training, research, and semiconductor talent development.

About The Program

The Firmware Engineer Apprenticeship Program is designed for individuals interested in developing the software that enables electronic devices to function intelligently.

Participants will gain practical experience in embedded programming, microcontroller applications, hardware communication, and system optimisation through hands-on training.

From Embedded C programming to DSP implementation and device communication, this programme builds the foundation needed to develop reliable firmware for modern electronic products..

Program Structure

The programme consists of 1 month of intensive technical training followed by 3 months of On-the-Job Training (OJT) with a company.

During the training phase at ASEM, Cyberjaya, you will gain practical exposure to:

• C Programming for Engineers
• Embedded C Workshop
• Efficient Implementation of DSP Algorithms with C
• Electronics Instrumentation and Measurement
• Signal Conditioning with Operational Amplifiers
• Embedded Linux Fundamentals
• Bluetooth Low Energy Communication
• IoT Communication Protocols

During the OJT phase, you will work alongside experienced engineers, applying your technical knowledge to real ASIC development projects while gaining valuable industry experience.

Responsibilities

As an Firmware Engineer Apprentice, you will:

• Develop and maintain embedded firmware for electronic devices.
• Write, debug, and optimise Embedded C code.
• Interface firmware with hardware components and peripherals.
• Support firmware testing and debugging activities.
• Analyse system performance and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers during product development.

Role Description

The Firmware Engineer Apprenticeship Program is a full-time, on-site role based in Cyberjaya. Apprentices will assist in designing, implementing, and testing embedded firmware for semiconductor and electronics applications, working under the guidance of experienced engineers. Day-to-day tasks include contributing to software development on embedded platforms, performing debugging and troubleshooting of firmware issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams in hardware and electrical engineering. Participants will document designs and test results, learn industry-standard development workflows and tools, and support continuous improvement of firmware performance and reliability. The program is structured to build practical skills, provide mentorship, and prepare apprentices for career opportunities in the semiconductor ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Strong foundation in Embedded Software and Software Development, with an interest in low-level programming for microcontrollers and SoCs.
• Understanding of Electrical Engineering principles relevant to embedded systems, including basic circuitry and hardware-software integration.
• Ability to perform systematic Debugging of firmware and embedded applications, using common tools and methodologies.
• Familiarity with ARM Architecture or similar embedded platforms, including basic knowledge of toolchains, compilers, and development environments.
• Diploma or degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field (students in final year or recent graduates are encouraged to apply).
• Comfort with C/C++ or similar programming languages, and willingness to learn new technologies and frameworks.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and follow structured development processes.
• Interest in the semiconductor industry and motivation to build a long-term career in firmware and embedded systems engineering.
